I just saw a poston another forum that mentionedreplacing the aluminum scope bases that came withnew gun with steel bases, and it got me to wondering. I've got aluminum bases and rings on four muzzle loaders. Never had any problemsexcept a time or two when I went"gorilla mode" whentightening a ring and stripped the aluminum threads with a steel bolt.
Now I've seen this mentioned before and I always figured - heck, modern aluminum alloys are prettytough and aluminum is even used for a lotof actions and receivers. But I can't help but wonder if replacing aluminum bases/rings with steel would do something magical.
Do any of you guys have first hand experience where it made a difference?

There is alot of Add Hype that is thrwn out just to Take Money from your pocket and place it in someone elses!!
Now, I have 2 yes two 50 BMG uppers that both, have Aluminum AR receivers with Aluminum scope rails machined in, one wears a heavy 20x Supper Sniper Scope, the other wears a Bushnell 3200 10x40. The aluminum rails in these and all othe AR mods don't seem to hinder there Pin Pointy accracy!!!
I have alumunim mounts on most of my guns.
There are Alloys of aluminum that are suppieror to some grades of steel, but that is another whole world.

Have no anecdote to pass on here, but it is a known that the scope tube itself is Aluminum. I just scoped my newest rifle with aluminum bases fastened to a steel barrel, and steel rings clamped to the aluminum bases, and clamped to the aluminum scope. Oops, maybe the barrel isn't steel since it is a CVA.
I have/do use both and have seen no difference in the two as far as accuracy or durability goes.

I have both, probably more steel than alum's but i really notice know difference.... the Alum's might go to heck quicker if they get loose but no reall difference here...

I have seen and had the experience myself and have had people bring them to the shop before I retired and sold it, it can be very frustrating trying to find what is wrong when an aluminium ring pulls the threads and loosens up and the gun appears to have lost its POI and is wandering around and looking for it. I had it happened recently to the Triumph was bought with a scope and the base and ring that came with it were aluminium about a year after I started shooting it it went from one hole to clean off the paper part of the time, I tore the gun down several times before I finally found what was wrong, as for the bases I have never had a problem with them.
