Default Boy was I rusty

I finally got caught up with everything going on and the weather was nice today so I took out my Lyman GPH 50 cal flinter and my Renegade cap lock with 45 cal GM LRH barrel.
Shot the Lyman first (see right target). The left target was shot with the 45 LRH. Both these groups were off the bench, 50 yds, open sights.
After I was done, I shot off hand at the lower black dot with the .45 at 50 yds. I didn't swab between shots on these 4 shots. I could barely make out the black spot.
These barrels were both treated with MX BC. Fouling was horrible. I was using FFg in the Lyman and Pyrodex P in the Renegade. I'm going back to good old bore butter.

Well the ones from the bench rest look pretty good. But that free hand shooting is hard. I don't care what they say. But your statement about the fouling has me concerned as I was going to shoot black powder out of one today, but a blizzard came in so I could not shoot.

Dave - the fouling was so bad that with the Lyman, I actually got the patch/jag stuck in the bore down near the breach. I had to unscrew it from the ramrod, remove the flash hole and pour in some FFFFg and shoot it out.

I think you done real good on all of it.The free hand shooting is one of those things thatlooks and sounds easy till you do it.Good shooting, every one of them would have been a money shot.

WOW!! now I am kind of worried about shooting black powder out of some of the barrels I treated. I shot black powder the other day out of a rifle that I had cleaned with the Montana products but used an alcohol patch to remove anything. And I did have bad fouling, but suspected the bad caps... Maybe the powder was reacting to the Montana Products?

What do you think? Do you suspect the fouling was caused by the Montana products.

Dang Bronko, `ya got me concerned too. Especially with Cayugad's follow up comment about the unusualfouling he experienced.

I'm heading for the lease tomorrow for a week-end of shooting. I'mtaking the .45 GM LRH Renegade and the Omega X7, and planned to give them both a workout with Pyrodex.

I treated the X7with MX Bore Conditioner about three weeks ago and have been monitoring the bore. A dry patch two days after treatment came out clean as a whistle. So I put in another coat of BC and have been checking it every week.It has stayed shiny bright.

I think I'll just dry patch it and leave the BC in there for the first couple of targets and see what kind of fouling I get. Then clean up the bore with my spray can of carburetor cleaner and shoot another couple of rounds. That should give us a good comparison.

Guys, I followed the instructions to a T. I was even sure to swab the bore with a dry patch before starting to shoot. In fact I ran two dry patches down the bore just to be sure I got all the oil out.
Trouble is I got heavy fouling with both the Pyrodex and the Black Powder. Maybe you can only use this stuff with BH and T7?
I don't know if I want to chance shooting my other MLs with the Pyrodex or BP. I may just flush the bores out with some alcohol patches andhot water and put the bore butter back in. Some of these barrels I've had for years without any rusting or accuracy problems with the bore butter.

PS: as for those off hand shots - I'm usually better than that. But if you notice what I thought a bit odd: Off the bench the bullets were hitting slightly right, but off hand (except for the one shot) they were a bit left.

Probably a little different cheek weld.

You must be a good shot off hand. Those 4 shots at the lower target are all kill shots on a deer if a can assume the black square is 1-2". The other targets above aren't that bad either but I guess you usually shoot much better if your complaining.

Oh I forgot to tell you guys. I had one charge left for the 45. There was a lone sandstone rock on the shale bank about 125 yds out. It looked to be about a foot around. I loaded up and got on one knee and drew a bead on it.I heard the smack of the bullet and saw a little puff of white dust so I knew I hit it. As I drove out past the bank I stopped the truck and went up to verify the shot and I definately hit it in the top right quadrant. But the rock was only about 6" in diameter. That really made me feel good.
I love that Renegade and that 45 GM barrel. I want to build a Hawken with a 45 now.
