Default Another Dumb Question

Can I buy bulk .45 cal pistol bullets and put them in a sabot and fire them through my T/C Omega? Or just cast .45 from lead and sabot those?

.452 bulk will work just fine. I shoot Hornady, Speer, Remington, all out of bulk sabots. You can get orange MMP sabots and shoot .458 even. Or go down to a smaller bullet like a .44 and shoot them out of the green .430 sabots.

Or cast your own bulletsand shoot them. All of them will work.

Perfect. Thats exactly what I want to do then. Cast and shoot lead at the range, recycle what lead I can find. 5 gallon buckets filled with sand should keep most of the lead contained. Thanks.

If I cast my own, should I use a gas check?

I never do. I cast a .458 405 gr LEE mold that throws a 423 grain actually. I used to cast a small 200 grain and I cast a lot of roundball, and other conicals. But have never used a gas check. Just make them fit the sabot and it will take care of the rest.

Why would yu need a gas check that is to reduce flame cutting in a modern gun. the sabot protects the bullet in a muzzleloader

Hey Powerfisher, I do like Cayugad and cast pure lead bullets from Lee's .458 405 grain mold. Mine come out heavy too, around 422 grains. I also use the lee .458 340 grain mold. For some reason those come out right at 340 grains.

I recently shot one five-shot group witheach bullet out of my Omega X7.I sized the 340s to .451 and shot them withHarvester short black sabots. I left the 422s unsized/as castand shot them with MMP orange sabots.I only tried one powder charge with each bullet and got pretty good results - good enough so that I plan to experiment with different charges to see if I can tighten up the groups. Here are the targets.
