Default Another Approach To Sabot Fit

Here's the sabot/bullet test I would like to see.

- Obtainseveral twelve-inch sectionsof rifled barrels with several different bore sizes, say .501, .502, and .503, and polish the bore of each with JB paste.
- Start abullet/sabot combination into a barrel section so that the bullet tip is flush with the end.
- Stand the barrel section in a vertical position, bullet end up,on aflat horizantal scale (a good quality bathroom scale?).
- Use a short rod to push the bullet to the bottom of the barrel section, and record the pounds of pressure required to do so.
- Do this five or ten times with each bullet/sabot combination, using a new sabot each time, and average the results.

In addition toyielding a pretty good idea of how tight various combinations would be in different bores, it would be very interesting to see how much variance there would be loading the same combination five or ten times.

Let's see, with 3 barrel sections and about 15 different sabots and2 bullet per sabot (.451 & .452 or .457 & .458, or .429 & .430, or .400 & .410) and five test per combination - that would be 450 data points.

If my forum name was something like "Sabotloader", I would conduct this test.

Semi-Before i retired i played around making a bullet seating devise, using a number of different die springs to get different load pressures. I gave up on it finding the bullet/sabots were very inconsistant. Sometimes my devise would bottom out before the bullet was all the way down the barrel. I firured if every load was compressed to the same pressure,it would be more consistant.

Yeah Chasam, I've experienced the same thing. Some of them slide down a lot easier than others from the same package.

I've often wondered if putting a stop collar on the ramrod when you seat the first bullet so that all others would be seated to the same spot (and presumably receivingthe same final pressure) would have an effect on accuracy. I suspect it's been done, but never tired it myself.

Lee

Atta boy - Lee glad you brought that thought forward....

But, in a way Chap has already provided the way to check and his simple method is really pretty darn close...

Place the butt on a decent scale - note the weight of the gun push the sabot down and it should show about a 30 lb increase +/-. Actually that is not a bad number in my book - i realize it is not very scientific - but it works for me..

But I am kinda interested in what Semiproposed...
