Default Range Session Today

Gun: CVA StagHorn
Scope: Weaver Grand Slam 3-10X
Powder:100 grains Goex 2F Pinnacle
Bullet: 370 grain Maxi-Ball
Wind: From the left; steady10-12 mph, gusting to about 20 mph.

Shot my cheap old CVA StagHorntoday. Was windy again. Started with the target at 100 yards using 80 grains of Goex 2F Pinnacle and the 370 grain Maxi-Ball. The five shot group is the one on the lower right: i was aiming at the upper left target. The small hole is made by a 240 grain .430 XTP using 80 grains of 2F Pinnacle.

Brought the target to the 50 yard line. Swabbed the bore and upped the charge to 100 grains of 2F Pinnacle. Fired a five shot group without swabbing.

The 50 yard target is the one on the upper left. The small upper hole was made by a 240 grain .430 XTP driven by 100 grains of 2F Pinnacle. The lower left target was from my last range session with this gun.

That thing throws lead pretty good. My Staghorn does also. The 50 yard group is excellent. Good power, good projectile. Nice shooting..

Is the ML the regular Staghorn, or the Staghorn Mag? I at one time had em both, but found new homes when the Hunterbolt Mag came out. But were real good shooting ML's for the money. By the way, Nice Shooting. BP

It is theold StagHorn with the two piece barrel/receiver. It is good for only 100 grains of Pyrodex. Those old StagHorn guns have a 1" in 24" twist barrel. Maybe that is why it shoots the 370 grain Maxi-Ball pretty good. i also have a CVA Magnum Hunter. Got to try it out with the 370 grain Maxi-Ball.

BTW, forgot to mention that i did use a TC bore button under the Maxi-Ball.

I never shot roundballs out of either one of them or the Mag Hunter, so I could'nt tell ya my experiences with them, just sabots. But My Mag Hunter really really likes them Hornaday .452 45Cal 240Gr XTP Mags and 150Gr of Pyro Pellets. All My CVA's like them XTP Mags
