Default To entend..or not to extend....THAT is the question!!

Ok guys, do I need an extended scope mount or not. I'm looking at either Talley's medium mounts or DNZ product's mounts. I'm getting mixed info on whether I need them or not. To recap, I have a Triumph that I'm gonna mount a Nikon Omega scope on. SWFA customer service says they don't sell to many extended mounts and recommends regular mounts. DNZ advises they specifically made the extended mounts for the Nikon Omega scope since it has such a large eye relief. I did notice that Talley's has 4 screws holding the scope down while DNZ only has 2. I don't know if it matters. HELP help HELP HeLp hElP HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!---DrAsus

Default RE: To entend..or not to extend....THAT is the question!!

I have high mounts only because I have shot deer at 5 yds out to 90 yds andI like to use the fiber sights for close deer.I do not have a Triumph butI think it has a hammer that could play havok on the scope if mounted too low. It really is a matter of preference. I admit I do have two positions on the stock I use whenI shoot using the fiber sights as opposed to the scope but that comes with practice. I had low mounts but the scope dia was too large for me to use the fiber sights so I raised them and have been using them ever since.

I'm trying to avoid the buying/returning game to get what I want. I was going with medium height but just don't know if I need the extended eye relief. Logicly it makes sense, but I dunno. Some times I think having so many choices is a bad thing. --DrAsus

What is you expected range to hunt in? Do you hunt think timber like me or do you hunt long open areas?

With that being saidI would go as low as you can unless you have excellent eyesight to use the open sights at that distance. I looked at the triumph and the hammer elevation appears to be below the fiber sights so I would go with the medium sights you were looking at.

Lots of guys shoot this gun, come on guys help a fellow out.

Do you have both the rifle and the scope now? Shoulder the rifle and have someone else hold the scope as if it were mounted, then move it back or forward to your best positioning. Take note of where the turrets on the scope tube begin and end relative to the barrel position, maybe mark those points with a grease pencil or tape. Then look at the available mounts and see if that turret position is attainable with either system.

Scope fit is a pretty individual thing. I would need extended - without a shadow of a doubt - but others might be just fine with the Talley's.
