Default round balls and patches

How many of you shooters remember the buttler creek poly patch for the round ball? I havenot seen these in a long time, I still have about 50 of them. They worked great in my t/c 50 cal. with 1:48 twist and 90 gr. of black. Very accurate, 5 shots at 100 in a 3" bull, but now gone like some of the other good things. Joe

were those a sabot that held a roundball? Or were they that plastic patch that used to wrap a ball?

They were indeed a sabot to hold a round ball. Cupped on both ends so orientation was no problem, and I reused them when found at the range with no real accuracy loss to speak of. They would split to fill the grooves and lands on the end near the charge and squeeze over cntr. on the ball. I think they went out of use because of the different bore sizes and possible loose fits when shooters didn't do their home work to insure proper fit.

I remember them, but to be honest I always thought they were one of those things sold to fix a problem that wasn't there...I've always had good results with plain old cotton ticking...

I suppose the same could be said of the new sabots yes? However they did seal better than ticking for sure and stood up to 90 grs. with no lube or blowouts.
Were not messy and loaded like a tight patch with the gain in accuracy, not a perfect ans. but right on track when pyrodex and substitutes came on the market. I used to drive to gander MT. west of Kenosha Wi. to get them when we lived there in the 70's Haven't seen any since. It did cut down on the flyers to. Joe

Not really...Sabots came about because of the inlines that were rifled for pistol bullets...
Round balls and lubed patches had already been in use over 300 years...With a proper ball/patch/lube combo or hornets nesting between the powder and ball you don't have patches burning through...

i have bag of them over 30 years old.

they are not like ones in picture below they are half the size.

i heard that balls were falling out barrel is why they stopped them and went to the ones you see below.
