Default 100yards with Mountaindevil

Beautiful day!! Friggin T -shirt weather so i loaded up 3 speed loaders, .530 round ball, .015 patch and 80gr pyrodex RS and took the old 54 cva mountain rifle out to 100 yards. I was shooting at a 3" circle i drew up before leaving and taped it to my base board. It was a little hard to see due to the sunlight but it works out just fine.

Normally i load 2 patches, one serves as a buffer but i did not do it this time and as usual, my 2nd and 3rd shots went high with this setup. These balls were also made from wheel weights and they loaded a lot tighter in the barrel.

Recovered one patch and was surprised to see the fair condition it was in. Usually if i only use one patch it is shredded to threads,

Tomorrow i am going to retake the test but use 2 patches this time and see how the groups are with the WW balls.

That patch is what I would call "barely survived". What kind of lube were you using? Can you get an .018 patch down the bore?

Do you mean you push a patch down the bore on top of the powder first, then set the ball in a second patch? Or are you actually double patching?

I am using the TC prelubed patches. I have some .018 pillow ticking but i have to swab between shots to get them down. Thats why i settled with using 2 patches as the first one takes the heat while the patch around the ball does the rest of the job.

New hammer i put on the rifle worked great too! No more stuck caps under the hammer and its beefy to hold on to. I hated the tiny stock hammers [:'(]

sorry Bronko. It sounds like you are in need of a mountain rifle? Check out gunbroker, they usually pop up there from time to time. Or go on ebay and buy a stock and then buy the rest of the parts, they are fairly cheap to build up.

I'll get some more shooting and pics up tomorrow for ya. [8D]

This has a has some really nice figure in the wood but from the looks of the other stock, it may be a tie between the 2 stocks.

Had to pry it out of my forehead and reinstall it after each shot
