Default Blackhorn Corrosion/ Pitting?

I posted this on the MM board also but wanted you guys to share in this.

I shot out a load of Blackhorn this morning that had been loaded for 3 weeks. It hadn't been in the rain or snow and fired without a problem. The problem surfaced when I went to clean my Triumph this evening. Where the powder load was in contact with the barrel there was the beginning of pitting. I worked on getting it out for a hour....Hoppes, Butches Bore Shine, Alcohol, Windshield Cleaner, Swabs, Brass Brush and still couldn't get it all out. I left it soaking in WD-40 for the night. I think I'll treat Blackhorn just like I would treat 777 in the future. They say it's non corrosive but it's a far cry from smokeless as to being clean. Some have likened it to IMR4759 in the way it looks but that is far as it goes. It definately smells different and is much dirtier. It's still the best out there and I'm going to continue to use it but I'll be cleaning up every night from now on. I haven't heard of this happening or experienced it myself. I've left it loaded for a couple of days but not this long.

I mentioned that to someone also. While I never let my rifle sit with Black Horn 209 I just thought that when I cleaned the bore with solvent, the residue I got out of it had to have some corrosive applications to it in a rifle. I agree, shoot it, and clean it.

I can tell you this post caused me to quickly push my T7 load (from last weekend) and clean away. Thankfully I hadn't suffered any corrosion. From now on it is shoot or push at the end of the day. Whew...........

Loaded my rifle with T7 on the afternoon of Nov 18th. Left it loaded till Dec 22, it fired off fine and the barrel shines after two prep pad double side swabs.
I left the rifle in our unheated honey house at night and on our screened in porch when I came in for lunch.

I like T 7 just fine.
Cost was good to, since Wally world has it on sale after season every year.

Cleaned my Accura after being loaded for over three weeks, no sign of pitting at all.

I have said before... I ALWAYS shoot, push out, or blowout all powder when I am done with a hunt... just for this reason. For me its not worth being lazy to risk damaging or harming your gun. I know guys who leave there guns loaded for MONTHS without unloading them.... I cant imagine doing that myself. I took Chemistry and Advanced Chem and Organic Chem in school and we did a lot of experimenting with metals and you would be amazed at what can cause corrosion to them.

Hey Panhandle, regarding the load that wasin the barrel, was it loaded on a squeaky clean barrel - or had you popped primers in it or shot it before loading?

Was this the first and only powder that you have used in your Triumph? was the slight discolorations in the breech before you loaded with BH209?

I have just opened my second container of BH209, I hunted the last week of the season with it and it rained several of the days. I have a Knight T-bolt that I use it in and have seen no signs of any corrosion. My T-bolt has seen several pounds of Pyrodex RS also. can you post a photo of what you consider to be " the beginning of Pitting" ?
