Muzzleloader??

My husband has been wanting a muzzleloader for awhile now. Does anyone have suggestions? I want to get him one for Christmas and need to stay under $500.

You are going to get a lot of different suggestions. Do you want to buy him just a Muzzle Loader?? Or do you want to buy a Muzzle Loader and a scope?? Are there are small local dealers in your area that you can trust??

$500 can buy a nice Muzzle Loader without a scope. What type of equipment does he already have?? Do you know?? Is it expensive or inerxpensive equipment---in other words what type of equipment is he use to hunting with?? Tom.

He's got a pretty big collection of guns, etc. and yes he definately seems to go for the more expensive items. He doesn't have a muzzleloader at all. He can add a scope on himself later if I buy one without...I just bought a scope for one of his other guns a few months ago and paid $300 for it so I knowthat could really jack up the price.

It sounds like he has pretty good taste. I would recommend one of the better rifles that are made by Thompson Center or Knight rifles. It is hard to go wrong with either of these two choices.

Some one already recommended a Thompson Center Triumph. That would be a great choice. Also the Thompson Center Omega and Encore would be great choices. These rifles come with different types of stocks. These stocks are the biggest part of the price difference in the muzzle loaders.

Any of the Knight rifles would also make a great choice.

Are you going to be mail ordering a rifle?? Or are you going to buy from a local dealer??

If you scroll down a few inches you will see that this site also has a Muzzle Loader section. If you post there you will get some great recommendations, and some great ideas. There are some good fellows on the Muzzle Loader forum. Give them a try. I am sure they will also provide you with some links where you can purchase the rifle if you ask them to. Tom.

As head0001 said Knight and Thompson Center are the way to go. However, if you want to keep it under $500 I think the Triumph like a replied earlier is the way to go. Its the most advanced of them all and will run you about $450 on Cabelas if you order it. The encore and the knights are great, but are going to cost you more then your limit. There might be one knight or two Knights under $500. But i can tell you from experience the T/C Triumph is an amazing gun and your husband will be completely satisfied, not to mention its easy to shoot and clean, which is huge! If you read the reviews on cabelas there isnt a sole that doesnt like the T/C Triumph and with the weather sheild and the easy breach its hard to beat for that price.

Head up to Walmart and check out the CVA or the Triumphbut don't expect them to be gun experts. You might want to do a little research first, but that's where you will get a steal of a deal. Especially if they have that little red tag on it.

Well its obvious that he has good taste. How else could he pick someone like you to buy him guns.
That being said, If an inline muzzleloader is what you want to get him, then you would be hard pressed to find one better than the Thompson Center Omega or Triumph. If you are leaning toward the traditional style muzzy, then either the T/C Hawken or Lyman Great Plains Hunter are the way to go. Good luck. And if things don't work out for you and him, you can always buy me guns.....
