Default 2F v. 3F

I'm sure this question has been asked before....

How much 3F powder can you load in a .50 cal inline? The owners manual on my Genesis restricts the load to 120 gr loose 2F. I shoot Pinnacle 3F. I want to get out to the range to work up my guns using 300 gr SW. Thanks!

I would imagine it would be the same. 120 grains is 120 grains.

i want to say you should back off 10% to equal the same performance as 2F...but i could be wrong.

if you think about it, your getting more powder in the same measurement because its finer and the grains will be closer together compared to larger grains...

think about gravel vs sand....the sand doesnt leave the gaps and voids the larger gravel does....

if your at a max load for that rifle, backing off a bit would probably be suggested...

Because there is an increase in pressure spike going from a 2f to a 3f, I would personally limit myself to 120 grains of it. Besides, you would never need more then that, would you? Although I think that the Genesis could handle more. So the Genesis limits itself to loose? I remember reading different.

page 15 (owner's maual Remington Genesis)

Warning! Only 2f or FFG Black Powder, Pyrodex RS, or Triple Seven FFG should be used in this rifle.

This muzzleloading rifle is designated for use with a maximum powder charge of 150 grains of FFG Black Powder, Pyrodex RS loose powderor 130 grains of Triple Seven FFG loose powder.

I'm new to black powder gunning but I agree with cayugad. My Traditions book says the same thing. Better to be safe than sorry. Just my 2 cents.

Even though a rifle can shoot 150 grains of loose 2f powder, that does not mean one needs to shoot that much. It is comforting to know that Remington/Traditions who ever thinks that much about their product to allow that. Then you have to keep in mind that Hodgdon's only suggests 100 grains of powder.
