Default Heads Up On Green Mountain Barrel Problem

Hey guys. I saw a post in thePercussion Rifles section of The Muzzleloading Forum by a guy whobought a GM .54, 1"x32, 1:70 replacement barrel for his Renegade from theLog Cabin Shop, Lodi, OH. During cleanup following hisfirst range session he discovered the nipple was M6X75 thread, and thebreech plug was threaded for the standard TC1/4X28 nipple.

I just got finished checking the .54 GM barrel I bought last month from Track Of The Wolf, AND FOUND THE SAME THING. The nipple starts to wobble in the threads after the first 1/4 turn out. Not a good thing. I just finished sending a notice to TOW and GM.

Do you feel that the threads in the breech plug have been damaged by the incorrect nipple, or is everything fine if the correct nipple is used?

The breech plug threads look fine. I put a correct nipple in it and it felt right as I screwed it in.

Themetric nipple screws in very easily and isloose all the way until the last turn, then firms up as it bottoms out. It did notdeformthe plugs threads at all - just wasn't engaged in the threads the way it should be.

Well, the least GM could do is give the correct nipples out. Much better for them than replacing barrels and/or plugs.

Semi

I wonder who supplied the nipple - TOW or GM, seems my GM barrel came with a red Hot Shot nipple and it was 1/4 X 28, but it was directly from GM.

The M6 X 75 nipple does share about the same thread pattern - really close - closer than one would think.. the difference being the M6 is slightly smaller in diameter than the 1/4" of the correct nipple.

If I really did not know better.... this could happen - this is a M6 x 75 installed in a 1/4 x 28 Remington breech plug. It screws in just fine and tightens snuggly with out a problem.... but it is slightly smaller in diameter..
