RE: any of you shoot pistol bullets out of your smokepoles?
People did that a lot more when sabots first came out. The problem is a 45 auto bullet is designed to mushroom at about 900 fps...what do you think happens if you drive it to 2000+ fps out of a muzzleloader? It fragments. This is why the market evolved for .40-.45 cal bullets designed to open in the 1500-2200 fps range for muzzleloaders came about.

Your Hornady XTP's as I understand it were handgun. For instance I shoot a 300 grain .44 caliber .430 bullet in a green harvester crushed rib sabot. My friend loads that same bullet for me that I shoot out of my Ruger Redhawk. He also loads a 240 grains bullet for me as well. Now I have no idea how hard that Ruger Redhawk pushed one, but I think my muzzleloader has it beat, other then I only get one chance instead of six...

I shoot a 200 grain 10mm XTP out of my 50 caliber. Load it 110 grains BH209 and a 50/40 crush rib sabot.

I shoot the 300 grain Speer Gold Dot bullet, designed for hunting with the 454 Casull handgun cartridge, and the 250 Gold Dot, designed for the .45 Colt. Both are excellent deer bullets.

Yes, a lot of folks do. Great bullets in this class are Nosler Partition HG, 300g XTP (not the 250), Speer Gold Dot 250g and 300g. You can also buy bulk rifle bullets, like the Remington HP or the Speer 45/70 bullets. I shoot a Barnes Origonal 300g 45/70 bullet in my Savage at about 2350 fps, and they hold up VERY well. The Barnes TSX 45/70 bullet is another good bullet for a MLer, part number 45843. You mate a .452 pistol bullet with a .452 sabot and a .458 rifle bullet will work with an MMP Orange or a Crushed Rib sabot (made for .452 bullets).
