Last week FCI staff joined forces with several other gun rights organizations on the floor of the New Jersey state legislature to prevent the passage of A-2116, a proposed 50 caliber ban. FCI Chairman John Burtt joined Scott Bach, President of the Association of New Jersey Rifle and Pistol Clubs (ANJRPC) and Bob Viden, NRA Board Member to provide New Jersey legislators with accurate information on the effects A-2116 would have on the community of law abiding gun owners from that state. After two hours of testimony, the New Jersey Assembly Judiciary Committee passed A-2116 (http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/2008/Bi...00/2116_I1.PDF) by a vote of 5-1.
As passed, the legislation will ban virtually all firearms .50 caliber and over.
Seems it would effect ML shooters the most right now.

New Jersey Assembly to Vote on Gun Ban on Monday, November 17!

On Monday, November 17, the New Jersey Assembly is scheduled to vote on A2116, legislation banning most firearms over .50 caliber.
Though previously amended in an attempt to address gun owner concerns, the legislation would still ban virtually all firearms over .50 caliber, including many popular modern day muzzleloaders. A2116 is so poorly drafted that it would even outlaw firearms manufactured during the Revolutionary and Civil War eras and their modern day replicas.
Instead of targeting criminals, A2116 singles out law-abiding gun owners and punishes them by banning their guns.
You are witnessing the stupidity of our government officials.. They make legislation without any realknowledge as to who it effects and what it really does. And they really do not care, unless its election time. Then they love everyone.
I am guessing their intent was to try and ban the .50 caliber sniper rifles, as we see in Iraq and such. Why, I do not know. Have you ever priced them or the ammo? The large bore rifles are not floating around on the streets. What threat does a muzzleloader pose to the community other then perhaps draws crowds at rifle ranges. It would be interesting to ask the sponsor of the bill, what he felt was so dangerous about the .50 caliber, and see what he or she says.
If the government, both state andfederal, would simply enforce the current laws on the books, there is no need for ANY further gun legislation. You can not believe all the laws pertaining to the use of firearms that are on the books. Most of them aimed at criminals using weapons in the course of a crime.
The real problem rests in the court systems with case over crowding and plea bargaining where under staffed District attorneys and case burdened courts are more then willing to deal down an offence to get it off the docket. And how do they do that? Simple, a person uses a gun in the commission of a crime making it a serious felony. They remove the gun from the charge, they plead to a less non gun involved offence, and then the caseisover.
The problem then is a violent criminal is eligible for parole or probation sooner, back out on the streets where they arm themselves with an illegal gun and they cycle starts all over again. The legislature then reads the stats of crimes involving guns and want to pass harsher, more restrictive legislation to control the use of guns in our society.

It does not matter what it exempts. It is still a ban on a firearm the the second amendment grants us. I hope the group that stood against it pushes this harder and gets it overturned. New Jersey is a horrible state for gun owners.

The big deal UncleNorby is that it's just another step in the gun ban process. What's been accomplished other than taking one more type of gun out of the hands of law abiding citizens. As Cayugad said, it's probably aimed at the .50 BMG sniper rifles, which as we all know are frequently carried by street hoods. They hide those four foot long twenty pound rifles in their baggy pants and use them to rob convenience stores. Why, in the last ten years there have been thousan....... -wait, ??? gosh, there hasn't been ONE crime committed with a .50 BMG rifle. Hey,that's OK. We still need to restrict them because one of the thugs we already caught committing a crime with a handgun and then released to prey on society MIGHTuse one to commit a crime, and we sure don't want that to happen.

Oh don't worry, I get it guys. Last I checked it was against the law to murder someone, no matter what gun is used. Cayugad's right, there's no need for further gun laws. But, the gist of the first couple posters was that this law would make 50 cal MLs illegal, and that does not seem to be the case.
