Default need help

I just took my new cva Optima pro mag 50cal. out to shoot it in. It held a 1in. group at 50yrds. But when I went to 100yrds. the copper jackets were coming off the bullets and not even hinting the target. The gun has a 29in. barrle, 1in28 twist. The bullet is 45cal.230grain hollowpoint from Horidy,110grains of pyrodex pellets. Can anybody tell me what going on. What can I do or use.

The copper was coming off the bullet in flight? WOW I never heard of that. Go to a store and get some 250 grain Shockwaves and try them. They should shoot well. Or you can try some 245 grain powerbelts. Load them with only about 80 grains of powder though. The shockwaves start your testing at 100 grains and then see how hard you can push them. Like I said, I never heard of the copper coming off in flight.

Never heard of a ML bullet coming apart in the air. However, that bullet isnot designed for high velocity: Rather it is designed to expand at velocities of 800-1,200 fps.Go to the 240 grain .430 XTP bullet or the 250grain .452 diameter XTP bullet.

Or take the good advice of Cayugad and go with the 250 grain SST/Shockwave.

To see a comparison with the other XTP bullets go to:

If your sabot is to loose the you might end up with the bullet going through the target side ways but I don't think we have ever had a bullet actually come apart in the air. It can happened I have seen some varmint bullets disintegrate in the air but it normally takes a velocity of around 4200 fps to do that. You might need to put a picture of your target at several different ranges so we can determine what is happening. Lee

Well, not saying it can't happen, but this is a first for me too. First off, where were you hitting the target at 50 yds? Back when I had an Optima, I used to shoot 245 gr Powerbelts. But if I were you, I would run to Walmart and grab a pack of 250 gr Shock Wave Bullets. Try 2 pellets (100 gr). Let us know what happens.

What type of backing are you using on your targets, and what are they hanging on, what is the backstops made of, and how far away is the target stand from the back stop?

May not be the bullet at all.
