I read on this forum of the speer gold 300 , but i am having difficulty finding it for the 50 cal. [omega] Even speer website did not list it. I am interested cuz we have been shooting 240 gr. tc's that do not open up and seem to lack knockdown power. Horror stories could bore you. input please

Isn't part #2482 for 45-70 rifle?

A bit off topic but what is the diam of this combo (.458 + orange sabot)?

Thanks, Martin

.503 is what I measure.. they load very nice in most of my rifles. Not too hard, and not too loose. The sabot is .023 (x2) =.046 + .457 for the bullet.

The bullet is a very solid looking thing. The actual hollow point (which is the pure lead part) is not real deep .101 is all and then the copper that wraps the lead core looks very well attached to the core.

Sabotloader can explain all of this a lot better then me.

The bullet you are looking for and the one that Cayugad is pointing out are different bullets... If you want the 452/300 grain Gold Dot - go to the Speer Website....

http://www.speer-bullets.com/

Choose > products
then > Bullets
then > Gold Dot
then in the middle of the page > product listing
then scroll down to #3974 300 grain bullet for 454 Casual.

So the product number is 3974

To get to the bullet Dave is talking about which is a .458 (45/70 bullet)

Choose > products
then > Bullets
then > Special Purpose
then > Product Listing
then scroll down to > #2482

Speer does not make any rifle bullets that are Gold Dot's, but this bullet is made as a Uni-Core bullet - which is much like the construction of the Gold Dot.

Now I need to go back and read if this what you wanted and has it already been pointed out...

Hope I have not confused the issue...

The Gold Dot 300 grain is a very good bullet and is 45 cal
The Special Purpose bullet is also a very good bullet designed for the Marlin 45-70 Rifle.

OK - I'll add a bit....
The .452/300 Gold Dot in a HPH-24 Sabot or Harvester Short Black should measure something close to .502-.503

The .458/300 Special Purpose in a MMP .457-.458/50 cal Orange sabot is closer to .503 - .504 in diameter - but the sabot is really forgiving and will go down most .502 barrels

is the ones I buy. Crushed rib sabot over 100g of 777 loose and you got a winner. Other good "magic bullets": Nosler Partition HG 300g, Barnes MZ 300g, Barnes 45/70 300g FlatNose barnes part number 45843, Barnes Origonal 300g. All these bullets have great terminal performance and with a high shoulder hit woudl be a "magic bullet", with the following characteristics:
1) accuracy
2) shoot thru with large exit hole
3) expansion and excellent terminal performance
4) no fragmentation with nearly 100% weight retention, keeping the bullet intact and drving deeply

As for mushroom, these bullets will expand on meat, not bone, they will NOT fragment and will expand to over 2x their size. They will have long shanks, not pancaked mushrooms, which expend too much energy expanding instead of driving deep. It takes 12" of penetration to kill the average man, so it will be same for a deer. The magic bullet is one that is accurate, no fragmentation, 2x expansion, shoot thru and nearly 100% weight retention.

saxman1

I do not like the 'total pancake' effect and the fragmentation in jell bothers me... but remember I am already sold on what I am shooting - so I am not a good judge... and totally biased..

The other part is they are just 8 miles down the road in Troy, Idaho
