That was an intersting read.. but to be honest, I'd hate to be shot with that little derringer. Whether it had a light load or a max load. That .44 caliber ball will make near a 1/2 inch hole in you. If it reachs a vital organ, you're dead.

When I was shooting my 1859 New Army Black Powder revolver with 30 grain of APP 3f and a .451 roundball, it would penetrate 2 inches of old plank. Now that might not sound like a lot, but again.. I'd hate to be on the receiving end of that.

Some of them will suprise you, with a patriot loaded with 50 gr P I took several deer and would have tried it with my black powder Rugar but the law here say the barrel is to short. Either will hit a clay bird at 50 yds no problem.

Those pistols were ofuse in case the rifle didn't quite complete the job on what would have become a very angry bear. 44 cal hole in the right place is serious trouble. A lot of the fur traders carried them in pairs and a big Bowie knife just in case there was still some unfinished business to attend to.
