I couldn't stand it anymore, I finally pulled the trigger and ordered a Left Handed Lyman GPR 54 cal Flinter. It should be here next week!!! I will have to wait until next week when I get my bonus money to buy the accessories I will need. I should be shooting in a couple of weeks!!! I have been back and forth for the last year or so talking with Cayugad about Flinters. I just couldn't stand it any more, I had to have one!!! I would like to personally thank Dave for all of the info and advice he has given me in helping me to finally take the plunge and buy my first flinter. Now all I need is somebody to come show me the ropes. I will post pics of the gun when it arrives and also post range reports.

That is a great rifle. I am sure it will do real well for you. 100 grains of black powder 2f (Goex) and a .018 moosemilk patch and .530 roundball and I bet it will shoot just fine. Also they come with a Agate that is very good. I got over 50 shots off mine. Just wipe them and the pan out with alcohol from time to time and they spark just fine. Lyman is a very good rifle. I bet it will bring a smile to your face. Wish I was there to watch you shoot it for the first time. But there is hunting to do around here..
Good luck with your rifle.

Another one gone old school, I love it! Sounds like you've gotten advice from a good source, and I think you're wise to search out an experienced local flinter to help show you the ropes.
I was fortunate to get some great advice from the previous owner of my flintlock rifle. Between that and some helpful tips from the mz message boards, the transition from inlines was very pleasant. Exciting, actually. None of the misfire/hangfire horror stories I'd heard about sidelocks.
Keep us up to date on how you're rocklock adventure goes!
Lyman makes a great LH flinter. Mine shoots very well. It also shoots conicals well at 100 yards. Now all you need is the Lyman peep sight. And as pictured, they work well on a LH rifle. Tom.

You're going to love it. Dave has probably already told you this, but just in case he hasn't - the first thing you should do with that GP is take out the Lyman touch hole liner and replace it with one from RMC that uses an allen wrench to install. It has a slightly larger hole and the socket for the allen wrench acts like a funnel to channel the pan flash to the main charge. I've now had more than 500 shots out of my GP and have had exactly two flashes in the pan. In both cases the touch hole was blocked with a piece of crud that I failed to notice when I filled the pan, and I never "pick" the flash hole unless I see crud.
Click here http://rmcsports.com/catalog.htm and type touch hole liner in the search box in the upper left hand corner of the page.

Things I've Learned: (1) It's not possible to please everyone, but quite easy to piss everyone off. (2) If you love animals as I do, then you're not a vegetarian. (3) There's no need to act stupid, even if you're very good at it. (4) If you eat right and exercise, don't smoke or drink, you're going to die anyway.
Thanks for allof the encouragement guys. Semisane, The RMC touch hole liner is on the list of things Dave gave me to order. I will be making a couple of orders next week. From what I understand, the biggest thing is charging the pan with the right amount of powder. From what I have read, too much is not good.
I started ML with a 50 cal TC Renegade Hunter 15 years ago. There wasn't even a ML season back then. I was just doing it for the challenge and the nostalgia. Then about8 years ago I went through the whole inline thing. I have a Knight Bighorn and a TC Omega. The last couple of years, I have been migrating back to using the Renegade. I have bought two other barrels for it. I have a 54 cal TC barrel I bought this year and a GM Long Range Hunter barrel for it. The next logical step in the progression to old schoolwas to go flinter. Of coarse Dave had no trouble convincing me to eventually get one. (The man is just not good for your pocket book!) The nostalgia of the older guns has always attracted me. This is probably going to be just as addictive as the whole inline thing was. Oh well.

Without a doubt the greatest education I received about fl was this. I had a fl that my brother lent me, I tried to shoot a doe with it at about 50 yards, the doe just stood there and stared at me in a tree stand. I "shot" about 10 time and the rifle never went off. we were in a rather dark garage, and my brother took the barrel off the gun and proceeded to shoot it without the barrel and he showed me via comparison how this gun was sparking and how a gun is suppose to spark. My gun was barely visible when I shot it, but his gun, also with the barrel off to prevent any stupid things happening was a "shower of sparks". So I recommend you take your barrel off, after you shoot it a few times, get in an almost dark room and shoot it a couple of time to see for yourself the "shower of sparks". Whenever you have problems, with a loose flint, a misaligned flint, what happens is the "shower of sparks" is a lot less and you can see it. That is the greatest tip that helped me. I also take the piece of leather out that holds the flint, and flatten a bullet and wrap it round the flint, it holds a lot better and then the flint can't drive back into the hammer so easily. Chap

Chap, thanks for the tip. I have never heard of that one before. I am positive this is going to be an adventure I am going to enjoy immensely. I am in the process of ordering all of the stuff I will need for the flinter.
I am going to try some Swiss 2f for the main charge and some Goex 4f for the pan charge. What kind of pan chargers do y'all use?
