can't please them all..

First thing I would do is get the bore butter out of them rifles. I suspect that is why the one rusted on you. Whether the rust will effect the accuracy of the rifle, only the range will determine.

Your Firehawk has a 1-38 twist according to my chart. So I would GUESS that it will shoot conicals and sabots. I would get some maxiball and some 300 grain Hornady XTPs. Start with 80 grains of loose powder and start shooting groups. See what happens.

The Bobcat has a 1-48 twist and I know they shoot roundball well and also they do a good job on powerbelts sometimes. I would start with 80 grains of loose Pyrodex RS and some patch and ball loads and see how they do. My CVA Stalker which is a Bobcat sold by Bass Pro is real accurate with 80 grains of powder and a patch and ball. And it will plant deer just fine.

I would clean all the bore butter out of them rifles. Then use a good quality gun oil if you want to protect the bore. And as for shooting, before you shoot, swab the bore with Windex or isopropyl alcohol and then some dry patches to take the oil out of the bore. Then pop a few #11 caps through it. This will carbon the chamber and make things shoot good. You might want to try some 250 grain Shockwaves also if you can find them in a store...

Good luck and keep us posted..

Bore Butter is one of those products that you either love it or hate it... It works very well for me in the method that I use it and for what i want it to do both in my ML's and even my trap shotguns.

I really do not think you should trust it to prevent rust in metal... although as much as I would not trust it a lot of people do and it works for them and certainly there are a lot of poeple that believe that will cause rust.

Welcome to the forum too... there is lot of information available and shared here.

All of my cva bobcats loved the 295gr aerotip powerbelt with between 70-80gr Pyrodex RS. I replaced the stock nipples with the stainless steel Hollow base Spitzfire nipple from cabelas. Becareful with higher loads as the bobcat is super light and will hurt like a SOB with a big powder charge *90-100grains*

I lost about an hour's range timeSaturday morning cleaning out one of the hunting club member's knight disc rifle after he ran his first patch down the bore and stuck it fast. He had put a dry patch on the jag, shoved it down the bore, and popped a capin preparation for loading his first shot of the year. (He's a one week-end a year muzzle loader hunter.)

Well, it turns out that he shot it last November, cleaned it,swabbed it with a heavy coat of bore butter, and put it in the gun cabinet until this last week end. After we got the stuck patch free by pouring some soapy water down the bore we proceeded to run patch after patch - pulling out rusty gunk. Now I don't know if he got it squeaky clean and dry before he put that borebutter in there, but he says he did.

After I clean my guns the bore gets a good wiping with oil.As Cayugad says, wipe out the oil with a solvent before the next loading.

If you have some WD-40 that also protects a barrel real well. Just keep it out of the trigger assembly as when it has a chance to build up it can gum things up. Other then that, WD-40 is a great Water Displacer and will protect the metal very well.

Most of the bias against WD stems from a time before the forumulation was changed. I love the stuff. Might feel differently if I hunted in sub-zero weather all the time (but I doubt it and that isn't going to happen anyway).
