Default whitetail down!

Got to the hunting area late this morning. Saw two huge bull elk, a lot of mule deer doe and 2 spike bucks. Driving to another area my brother in law spotted a whitetail in some oak brush, very thick stuff! He got out and snuck into their bedding area and i saw him rise up and fires his 22-250 (he broke the scope on my Optima) The 52 grain bullet skipped across the top of the spine and dropped it. He ended up using his .40cal sidearm, After 4 shots the ordeal was finally over. I recovered one of the .40 slugs and it wasnt even mushroomed. Scary thing as this is the same ammo he used while on patrol. 3 shots to the neck didnt even exit and the 4th to the head did not exit either.

Shot with the 22-250 was less than 50 yards. This would have been perfect for the Optima if the scope hadnt took a dump.

I am uploading some pics now (dial up) and will post asap.

deer had double brow times that went directly forward straight into the hair line.

total points was 6x7 (13point eastern)

Well at least the story ends with venison for the freezer. Kind of suprised about the 40. What brand and type of ammo was he shooting in the pistol?

no clue what brand as they are special issued bullets.
Photobucket wont upload all of the pics due to the speed so here are a couple, Big body deer! I had to help drag the bastard back and just about keeled over after it was in the truck.

Brother In law,

My brother in law's bro just took a forkie mule deer about 20 minutes ago. Pretty darn good hunting this year with the cold weather and snow. I want to put in for a tag next year and see what i can come up with. I would like to take a whitetail as i have never hunted them and they are starting to take over this Unit.

If they're special issue .40 cal, and he's some type of law enforcement, my guess is they're frangible lead free bullets, meant to be used for target practice only. I still have a case of it from when I went through the law enforcement academy. My understanding is it's designed to hold together until it hits something hard enough (like a steel target plate) and then just kind of turns into dust. If he didn't hit anything real hard, it wouldn't have done anything. Just my guess.
