Default Lyman GPR Photos

I finished this gun from a kit last winter... I don't think I ever got around to posting photos.

I really enjoy shooting this front stuffer. 60 grains of FFg Pyrodex some .015 pillow ticking and a round ball and i can put them under 2 inches @ 100 all day long...

The stock after shaping was sanded to 400 grit and whiskered twice. A mixture of alcohol stains were used to get a nice dark color to the European walnut and then I hand rubbed with either 1000 grit sandpaper and down to 0000 steel wool a dozen (yes 12) coats of tung oil.

The metal furniture and barrel were heavily browned with laurel mountain forge solution in a sweat box. I took some 000 steel wool and rubbed it back to a semi- bright / gray - brown color which gives it a nice aged / patina'd look. I've let it rust up a bit around the nipple and after rubbing back has left some surface pitting to add to the look.

I used a large flat mill file drawn down the length of the top 3 lands to remove all of the punched printing done by Lyman. In it's place I put it in the Bridgeport and did a little bit of engraving...

Now I just need to figure out what to build next.... I am thinkin Isaac Haines styled early PA long rifle - flint... Nothing overly fancy and or ornate. Something to hunt with that balances nicely with a 42" swamped barrel in 50 or 54 caliber.

I hope she is as pleasing to your eye as she is to mine...

Great looking rifle. Those lyman's are really a great rifle. the only problem with yours is that the lock is on the wrong side. I wish I could say I finished mine, but I am not that talented. I tried to do a Richard's stock for a 22 magnum once. The results were nothing like yours. Tom.

Very nice indeed. A lot of time and love put into that rifle.

There's one for us southpaws. Both are beautiful guns. I have a LH GPR 54 flinter coming for Christmas! Tom, how do you like that peep sight for hunting?

IMO that peep sight is the only way to go. My rifle is very accurate to 125 yards. Tom.
