You might add the economy of shooting lower charges as a plus, wimp.
What are now considered by many to be "low charges" would probably have been thought to be excessive and wasteful in the past. Whoever came up with the notion of "magnum" muzzleloaders, along with the fellow that decided powder should come in compressed clumps, should have their rich butts kicked.
The max on my CVA is 100gr loose, so the 90gr that worked good for me the other day is damn near a max load so I wouldn't consider it a low load. For me I would consider 80gr and under a low load. Id say 90-100 gr loose is a good medium load. And for the guns that can handle more loose 110-120 is a heavy load. The recoil wasn't bad, but the Optima Elite is pretty heavy and shootin the tight fitting Shockwaves itwould have been recoiling a little more if it wasn't.

Cory - I've been finding that around 80 grs is plenty. I only have one rifle that like a hot charge of 100 gr of FFg. But my others shoot 70 - 80 gr with good accuracy. So more isn't always better.

I'm not as good as I'm gonna get - but I'm better than I used to be. "Life without God is like an unsharpened pencil - it has no point."
Well you certainly have to take into account what the rifle will shoot well, sometimes that's a relatively light load.
I have found that a lot of guns that don't have any problem like bedding difficulties etc. will tune up with two loads quite a few of my guns will shoot70, 80 or 90 and then group again at 110 to 130, I believe this is due to the circular vibration of a rifled barrel when the barrel comes back to the rest point [where it started] most seem to shoot best if the bullet exits at that point. If you ever get a chance and have not seen it watch the slow motion pictures of exterior ballistics bullet mechanics. I do not know if they have ever put it on the Internet or not.
I personally have found most of my best accuracy loads seem to be around 110 gr, I like to shoot for accuracy so I generally use the most accurate loads I can find. It is also my opinion that loads beyond 135 gr with a lot of powders add to the recoil and waste a lot of powder, BH209 may be the exception to this as it seems to keep adding a quite a bit to the velocity, it adds quite a bit to the recoil too, and for me personally 2100 or 2200 fps is all I need, I do have an occasional long shot. the two guns I am using this year, I am only shooting 75grs of triple 7 or pyro rs with powerbelts. pretty good groups at 100yrds. doing to do a final sight in monday.

With your shoulder problem you might consider trying the 200gr Shock Wave or the 180 gr Gold Dot they both work quite well on game and for flat shooting at long range. The PB and Sabortooth worked well with 75 or 80 gr for me in the woods but I needed something that shot flatter for long shoots and when I was using Pyrodex and 777 the 200gr Shock Wave really worked well for me with a 100 or a110gr load of 777 they did quite well out to 200yd and the recoil was quite mild.
