Default Scope base mounting question

I was at a gun store the other day, and was watching a guy put a scope on a triumph, he squirted rem oil on the barrel and then the bottom of the scope base, and then mounted it.

Ive never seen this before, is this a good idea ????

Not at all. Better to have cleanand dry surfaces, including all threads. Loc-Tite or nail polish - a tiny amount on the screw threads only (optional). Allow to cure if such sealant is applied, then oil the area.

That's not something I've ever done or seen, although I understandthe objective may be to prevent rust under the scope base. I mount the base clean and dry, then use my fingertip to work an automotive paste wax around the perimeter of the base where it meets the barrel.
