Went to the hunting lease early Friday morning withplans to bush hog some food plots on Friday, have an all day range session Saturday, and return home Saturday night to begin preparing for the possible hit in our area by Hurricane Gustav.
Got the bush hogging done as planned and even gavea few of the plots an initial plowing. So four of us guysare sitting around Friday eveningwith the barbecue grill going and having a few cold ones to celebrate the day's success, when the phone calls from the wives started. All the gals are nervous about the storm which is way the hell down south of Cuba - but heading into the Gulf of Mexico, and want the guys home to help them worry. Now, we all knew there was notone darn reason we couldn't stay in camp until Saturday night as planned and have plenty enough time to secure the homestead during the day Sunday and evacuate the area if necessary. But what `ya going to do about a nervous woman? So we tell them there's no way we can leave Friday night because we've already had a few toddies and should not get behind the wheel. But the Saturday shooting session got cancelled and we all packed up early in the morning and headed home.
Got the Thinking on the drive home. If we didn't all have cell phones they never could have called, and would have been sitting around awaiting our return Saturday night as planned. Sometimes a cell phone can be a curse. On the other hand, it sure is nice when you make a kill and are ableto call a buddy back at campto come and help youdrag out a deer.
I've got nothing against people in Texas, but I sure hope Gustav visits them instead of us.

I kind of wondered if that storm was going to catch you...
It does not sound good with the wind speeds and the rain in it. For the sake of your area, I sure hope it misses you or at least looses strength before it makes land...

Good luck Semisane, right now it looks like you guys may end up on the bad side of the storm.
I just talked to my parents and family who live near the TX LA border where Rita went through and they are watching it close. They are near the western most area where the storm may go. They tell me most of the stores have already closed up and many of the people have already left. They are waiting till tonight or in the morning due to not wanting to be in the bumper to bumper traffic headed north. During Rita it took 12 hours to go 70 miles, they said never again will they go during the big rush. The roads are looking much less crowded now and they still have about 20 hours till the storm makes land fall. If it hits closer to your area they may just ride it out at home. They have at least 3 generators and plenty or food and a well for water so they should be fine if its not a direct hit.
Good luck and be safe.
