B209 range report

Finally got out yesterday to test some BH.Had worked up my KRB load the day before and wanted a back up rifle.Tested my Omega w/3x9 Buckmaster.Started and stayed w/90gr.BH,250gr.standard Shock Wave and w209 primer(thanks lemoyne).Used fairly heavy seating pressure.Seven rounds,no swabbing at all,let bore cool 4-5 min.between shots.Definately a different recoil from t72f.A quick punch is how I might describe it.Not at all flintching re-coil to those who have such tendancies.50% or so less smoke.Clean up about 30% quicker than t7.Not a necessity but still a plus.Oh,I almost forgot,7 rounds could be covered w/a 35 cent piece.I'm likeing it.Expensive, but for hunting,probably not bad at all.Would like to shoot another bullet,have had Shock Waves punch straight through when placed in the crease.Probably going to test 250 spitfires,gold dots(sabotloader)and nosler partitions.Might add that my bore had been J B'd before the first round went down the tube.The gun has about 500-550 rounds through it.No problem loading.Nice easy tight slide.

Hunt4me... seven shots covered by a quarter sounds pretty good to me. I agree about the recoil, but you described it better then I could. I think the Shockwaves would make a good bullet but I HAVE NOT SHOT A DEER WITH THEM. Too many people have though to make me doubt their ability. I guess I just have to have the opportunity.

If you have any 250 grain Speer Gold Dots or the 250 grain Hornady XTP in a HPH sabot, they might do real well for you. Also a lot of deer have fell to that XTP. So all it boils down to is a little more testing and bullet applications..

At least you know the powder is accurate and does all that it promises. I like the breech plug backing right out after shooting also... Nice shooting.

Cayugad,..I wish it were 25 cent pc...actually would have taken a 35 cent piece..I should also mention I was useing the deep dish breech plug.Lemoyne said he got somewhat better targets with that one.That is one reason this is such a great site.Tons of valuable info. from obviously good people.I am going to push some gold dots through it.Which sabot are you suggesting,the short 12's or the 24's.Have taken several whitails with the Dots and deer really don't like them.They drop within sight if placement is correct.I don't like puttin it in the shoulder.too much meat loss.That's good BBQ STUFF

I should add to my original post that the targets were at 75 yds.I zero my mzl.guns at this distance.Which gives me point and shoot out to about 125.Plus just about all my deer are taken in the 40-80 yd.range. hunt4me

I do not think you can get the short black or the HPH-12 down your bore bore... Anywaythey are to tight to go down mynew Knight Disk Extreme. Think you will need the HPH-24. Especially in the Omega..

Thanks for the tip sabotloader.I'm really hopeing for the Gold Dots to group.Even if I sacrifice a bit of accuracy,they do a number on deer and the cost is obviously much better. hunt4me

Just from my experiance remember that Gold Dots need to be driven pretty hard to maintain accuracy.

Another queston? is your Omega and older one? The reason I ask is that newer Omega's seem to have a much tighter bore and you might need the 3p with a full .452 bullet... Never mind you answered my question in your post - the standard SW sabot is a HPH-24...

Sabotloader,..."pretty hard" ? I was pushing them with 110 gr.of T7ff last year.Any idea of the BH209 equivolent..Really hopeing for some good accuracy with the Dots.They are a good deer bullet,at least in my opinion.My Omega sports an invention some "guy" came up with.It has a channeled out wooden "spacer"under the barrel.Floated it nicely.Groups improved considerably,thanks to him. hunt4me

I THINK - 110 grains of T7-2f is right on the mark... that is what I shoot except I do use 120 in the Knight DExtreme... I also believe that BH-209 is really close to being equal with the T7. Of course that depends on sabot fit - ignition - compression with BH because it takes all of those for the progressive nature of the powder to work to it full extent.

Here is a comparison chart(s).... Remember also - most say that T7-3f is hotter than 2f - but i can not prove it. When I shoot them both across my chrono there is really not a big difference..... there is a difference but not that big... 3f is easier to ignite and reaches peak quicker than 2f

good testing... i bought some more of the BH powder to use which im gonna sight my ML'er back in at 75 yards also. I tested 100 yards just to see which was damn good. But like you, I seldom shoot over 75 yards at all, normally 25 yards max. Ive had hit and miss results with shockwaves. Some went clean through while others wouldnt exit the other side of the deer. These were shoulder to shoulder shots which did effect the impact some. But at under 35 yards I would expect an exit. Neither deer that I had no exits on went over 26 yards though(one dropped dead). Both were also mature 4.5 year old bucks so a little tougher than shooting a doe. But I have to see a sabot fly as accurate as the shockwaves. I hear good things from the SST's though. Barnes supposedlt makes a dang good sabot also but I couldnt get those MZ tipped ones to grouo worth crap in m knight. Now in the pro hunter they may do better.

I would be interested to see tests done between the regular shockwaves and the superglides since some believe the easy to load sabots effect accuracy but I havent noticed any differences
