Leave them loveable little critters alone (unless they're one of the 4 poisonous varieties found in the U.S.).

I usually leave snakes alone. But, we'd have a problem with them coming in the window. True story, when I was just starting out in the fire service we had a local ding-dong out mowing his yard. He seen one of the most harmless snakes alive, a garter snake and stopped his mower, ran and got the gas can and threw gas on the snake. Lit up a match and threw it at the snake catching it on fire. The snake went next to his screen door and was able to get inside the house where it crawled into the furnace closet and then inside the wall. Lucky for him it only caused a couple ofhundred dollars in damage. He was able to knock the dry wall away and get it put out himself just as we showed up. He only lived two houses from the fire house and we were there training so we were pretty quick getting there. What a dork.......

You didn't say what kind or how big they were. Depending on where you live thay may be looking for water or a cooler place to rest. I agree if they aren't poisonous let them go, they will disperse from your area soon enough.
And if you live on a farm, the black snakes are great for getting rid of any mice or rats you may have in the barnor other out buildings.

I remember when I was a kid baling hay we would get snakes in the bales all the time and we would always be seeing them in the yard and in the garden. Mainly garter snakes. Now you rarely see them. Farming has gotten so intensive these days. I would leave the snakes alone, be glad you have them.

If you take into consideration all the good a snake does, no one would ever kill one. Even a poisonous snake does good things, like mice, rats, and small rodents that want to invade your house. Black snakes are not a danger. While they might not be something you want to carry around with you, they do not hurt you, and do a lot of good. And they will climb.

Take a bucket ... fill it with water, and put that out in the corner of your lot near shade. If the snakes are looking for water and a cool place they will head that way. I sure would not kill them.

When we were kids, there were bull snakes, blue racers (one chased me all over the place one day after I teased the snot out of him), garter, and some other ones.. as kids were were told to leave them alone and not harm them.
