Default Rust, behind breech plug, where cap is loaded

Gimme some help if you can. I've got a Knight wolverine ML, old style, (blued barrel, synthetic stock and#11 cap). I got very lazy a few years back and had fired the ML, swabbed the barrel really well but never cleaned the area behind the breech plug until a few months later(the area where you put in the #11 cap). Obviously this allowed that area to rust through the blueing. Like I said, inside the muzzle is squeaky clean, no pitting, onlya smooth bore with excellent rifling. The areabehind the breech plug is the only issue.

What is the best way to get rid of the rust? I've kept it lubed very wellas to prevent further damage. But, I'm wanting to fix it as this ML shoots tacks. Give me some input as to ways/methods to fix it. Thanks,Greg

I believe the area you are talking about then in the tube and open breech leading to the breech plug on the back end of the barrel. All you can do is put some quality gun oil like Kroll Oil in that area. Then with a brush start to scrub that area free of all rust. You will never get the pitting out. But once you have all that rust removed, you can use solvent to get any oil out of that area. Then take some alcohol and wipe that area out with patches. Birchwood Casey sells a blue pen.. it is for touch up of areas just like you described. It looks kind of like a large magic marker. After the alcohol has evaporated, paint over all the areas that are not blued anymore and let that harden. It sticks pretty good actually. I painted the bottom of a scope that I burned the paint off and it is still blue on the scope. Then once that marker paint dries, put a good coat of oil on all of that. In the future pay special attention to that area.

OK, Cayugad, Thanks!

What type of brush? Stainless steel, brass, what?

I do understand that I won't be able to get the pitting out. That is fine. It's just such a chore having to keep a fairly thick coat of grease on it all the time so it doesn't get worse. That's the price I pay for getting lazy. Hey everyone, learn a lesson from me, laziness doesn't pay!!!!

Let me know what type of brush and I'll get on it this week. Thanks, Greg

a brass brush on the end of a ramrod would work I would think. I wonder if some steel wool would do the same thing. All you want to do is get all that rust out of the pitting.

There's a polishing kit that can beused with Dremeltools that contains a felt tip & rouge of different gritstosmooth &polish up the pittedsurface if you keep at it long enough.
It's sold atWalmart, Searsandhome improvementtype stores.
There'sother attachments too, like a sanding drum, wire wheel &[diamond or stone] grindingtipsdepending on the severity.

Thanks guys. I'll give it a shot today and see what i can come up with. I'll start with a 12 guage brush on the end of a section of ramrod. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks again, Greg
