I read where he wanted more work done on the range.. (slave driver that he is) so I decided to hit the range with a White.
I knew the Bushnell Elite was pretty much on at 75 yards so I set up the bench (later to shoot with range finder and discover it was at 80 yards) and wanting something small to aim at.. on my Birchwood Casey Shoot N-C targets they have two small 3/4 inch stickers to show you how the small bulls eyes work. One reads "before" like this one does, and the other after. So I taped that to a small paper plate and shot at it five time to check the scope. I sure wish that fifth shot had not pulled, that would have been an pretty good group. Shooting 70 grains of Swiss 3f and using a wad. Also swabbing between shots.

I then moved back to 100 yards (according to the range finder) and changed powders to Pyrodex P. I decided to adjust the scope for that distance on a new large shoot and see target dot. The first three were low, so a few clicks the wrong way and then a little more adjusting finally got me shooting dead on at the bulls eye.

I then upped the powder charge, put up another little sticker target and shot for a group. The White shot perfect, but perhaps it was the humidity or something. If I did not swab the barrel, when I loaded the next conical I could feel the filth in the barrel. The two shots outside and high were second shots where I tried not to swab. When I did swab, it just layed them in that Shoot N-C target pretty nice. I want to repeat all of this but with different powders. After shooting those conicals, I had enough for the day. Plus the action of the gun was getting kind of dirty so I called it quits...

It never ceases to amaze me when I see those big kickass holes in a target. I just shudder at the thought of an animal getting hit by something like that.

Man, that White lays them in there, big chunks of lead, beautiful shooting. I see why that is one of your favorite riflesm and it takes swabs and wads to getthat accuracy in this rifle. Chap

Man Cauygad, it's a shame you have to wipe the bore between shots. You just know you're going to need a quick second shot after you shoot a white tail with one of those piddling little bullets.

Things I've Learned: (1) It's not possible to please everyone, but quite easy to piss everyone off. (2) If you love animals as I do, then you're not a vegetarian. I might add that the .451 is topped with a Bushnell Elite 3200 2-7x32mm with rainguard andfirefly and that is just an excellent scope. I like my Nikon scopes a lot but this Bushnell is just sweet. Sabotloader and Batchief told me about the Bushnell Elite. It is the first one I have ever used, but if they ever came on sale again, I would purchase a couple more just to have on hand. I like the eye relief, the focus, the clarity is excellent, and being a 32mm does not seem like a disadvantage so far....
Batchief was the one that told me to try the 488 with the Swiss 3f and the wads... he was right on the money.

My 460 gr 50 cal conicals are almost 1" long, how long are those 45 cal 488 grainer's? Just think, some states won't let you hunt big game with that load because it's not 50 cal or larger, go figure.

I know they are not legal out in some of the Western States, and that kind of surprises me when you consider the weight of the bullet and all. I am sure they do that so people would not try to hunt large game with a .45 caliber roundball. Maybe they are worried of wounding and not recovering animals. I really do not know their reason, but it is their State so they do as they feel right..
The 488 grain measures 1.205 inches long and it is a true .451 in diameter. I have no idea of the velocity with 75 grains of Pyrodex Pbut when they hit that steel trap of mine it makes a really cool ringing sound.
