Default XTP MAG Pistol Bullets

Hello Everyone...I haven't been on in awhile. Nice to be back online checking out all the posts!

I have a fairly new Z5Omega 50calthat really likes the 250gr. Super Glide Shockwaves(yellow tip)with the yellow sabots.
I bought some XTP MAG Pistol Bullets to try out also. I'm pretty sure they are the 45cal sabots. The ones Walmart carried last year.
Anyways, they were hard as hell almost impossible to load. Had to use an old ramrod and beat 'em in to get started...And would not group whatsoever, no matter what charge I tried, etc. But I think they would shoot well from an Omega 50 with the right sabots. I believe I need the other thinner sabots. but can't remember the number you guys told me awhile back. Is it MP-24 or something similiar? I think the ones that came in the pack ar 12's maybe. Also what other brand of bullet is the same as the 250 gr. SW's? And which sabot should I try to get the same results. I just want to find a good combo at a real good price!! Thanks for any help.

Chris

The TC Super Glides equivelent to MMP HPH-3p-EZ load sabots

The ones you got with the package of Hornady's was probably HPH-12's especially if they were from old stock.... the new packs will come with HPH-24's...

The 24'smight be to tight in that Z5

YES and the old ones where so tight they could not be loade by hand alone. So the new ones are thicker yet? Don't make sense to me. I am fairly new to Ml'ing only been doing it for 5 years now. This is really the first time I got "technical" with my loads. Now I shoot a differen't rifle, so I need to learn some more. My Omega's quite different from my White Mountain. On the wight mountain a patched roundball and 70-90grains was good to go. But that was a Carbine. Now I got more to work with.

No the new packages of Hornady bullets will come with HPH-24's which are thinner than the 12's that came in the older packs....

MMP sabots by size (.451-.452/50 cal sabots) - Just me but i really like MMP sabots they are a bit more flexible/pliable in the cold weather....

HPH-12 Thickest
HPH-24 - Regular Harvestor Sabots - either the long petal
HPH-3p-Ez thinnest- Harvester "crush ribs" also belong in this class

The other thing you might consider - I buy bulk reloading bullets - usually Speer Gold Dots .452/250 grain or .452/300 grain- then I buy packages of sabots to fit the different guns that I shoot -less money spent that way...

Cool Thanks, that now makes sense. That's what I intend to do: Buy seperate bulk sabots and bullets eventually.... Are the speer gold dots the same as the shockwaves? I know some brand is the same bullet as the SW. Just can't remember which one it is.... thanks

P.S. So the crush ribbed sabots would be like the yellow T/C Super Glide sabots?

No Shockwaves are made by Hornady and you can not buy them in bulk..

Speer Gold Dots are a bonded pistol bullet - Hollow Points....They are deadly on Whitetail easily out 175 yards

Here is a pic of an open Gold Dot

Here is the information sheet on the 300 grain

I would 2nd everything that SL said. I have shot the Gold Dot in my FL and killed a doe with it, expansion was picture perfect just like the picture shown in SLL post. They are resonable priced, I shoot them in my FL with Crushed Rib sabots, when I run out of Noslers in my inlines I am using Gold Dots. Every time I make a purchase from MidSouth, for anything, I add a box of 300g Gold Dots in. Just a way to stock up without breaking the bank. I have about 5 boxes now of 50. I would like 10 or so. So the Gold Dots are the best of the low cost bullets on the market. Several folks over on the Savage board also shoot Remington 4500 and they are excellent in accuracy out of Savages and low cost. Some hunt wiht them also, they fragment on bone, but if your shooting 2.5" at 200 yards, and 1" at 100 I don't think your gonna hit bone, your gonna put it where ya want it.

You might want to check out the shooting of an 300g XTP Mag into Perma Gel by TheLeftHand over on the Savage forum:

http://dougva.proboards34.com/index.cgi?board=Savage&action=display&thre ad=1206924946

That should give you some good idea of how the bullet will perform.
