I shot my new 10 ml-II today out at the farm. I am not as scientific as you fellers, I had some Pyrodex pellets and some saboted bullets so I bought some 209a's and let her rip I was impressed at 75-80 yrds they all stated under a 6 inch circle w/ open sights. cant wait to try some smokless powder and try some new bullets with a scope of course.
I had a blaaast!!!

I have a Savage, and as one fellow said on here or somewhere it is a "mini-ballistics labatory". So with that said, they way to "Savage Succeess" is:
1. Clean the gun good
2. Shoot the "book loads", what the manual says, not what anyone else says. Shoot the book sabot, with the book primer, with the book bullet with the book powder. Get that grouping 1.5" or less at 100, that should be easy with any scope after you tune in. What is book load, 44g of AA 5744, 300g XTP, MMP short black sabot and a Winchester primer. That is what all the 'Henry Ball" folks shoot with great success.
3.Make sure you seat the bullet/sabot on the load with all your wight
4. Make sure the sabot is tight, not tight then no ignition, no ignition no liftoff.
5. Join Doug's Savage forum, google that for the URL. Lurk out, ask questions, read all the tips and hints. If you have a problem, post right away and you will get a reply pretty quick. I had no idea why I was getting misfires with 4198, it was because I was using loose sabots and didn't seat the bullet real tight.
6. Read Randy Wakeman's site all the Savage stuff, especially the Savage success stuff or the "royal Savage Road". He is opioniated, but he has logic behind his opinions, just as I am. Read, learn, make up your own mind about everything.
7. Best wishes and have fun. Be prepared to spend money on scales and bullets, but it is fun if you like stuff like that.
8. Once you go away from the "book loads" buy 1 package of each of the following:
mmp short black
mmp12
mmp24
mmp Orange sabot for .458 bullets
mmp 3 petal ez
Harvester black sabot
Harvester Crushed Rib
Harvester Crushed Rib for Smokeless (red in color)
Sabot tightness is critical in the Savage, you want "Golidlock tight". No loose so it slides down easy. Not tight so you have to pound it down. But tight with a good bit of resistence.
9. Bullet/sabot combination that I had excellent accuracy bullets in my Savage
SW with supplied sabot 300g, 44g AA 5744

PBE 275g with MMP12 sabot, 44g of 5744

I used this bullet and load all last year for hunting
Barnes Origonal 300g Harvester CR Sabot 66g of 4198 or 44g 5744

Barnes 45/70 .458 Rifle bullet, CR Sabot, 44g 5744

You mileage will vary, but you will have a great time finding out what shoots for you and you will really think thru your "bullet philosophy" with the Savage.
10. You will have to get a new ram rod with some of these bullets, I use an XS Power Rod. It is great, bt I have to put on a Barnes Aligner, and that is a pain. I may buy a solid aluminum rod, cause it just takes too long to screw the end into the rod in the field.
