Peep sight vs standard open sights

I have an Omega and don't really like open sights all that much. We can't use scopes during muzzleloader zeason in MN and I am thinking about switching over to a peep sight. Does anyone have pros and cons on peep sights? Which peep sight would you recommend?

Peep sight normally are more accurate to most shooters then the standard iron or fiber optic sights. There are a lot of different brands of peep sights on the market. For your Omega, T/C does outfit the Omega X7 with a peep sight. I would consider that one or aTRu Gloe &Williams Peep sight. Lyman also makes some excellent peep sights.

The draw backs of peep sights are shadows. Those first andlast twenty oddminutes of hunting time when the shadows blend with the trees and all the colors, is when peep sights can get hard to see through. At this time many of them remove the aperture and then shoot through the larger ghost ring hole. If this might be a problem be sure and practice with the ghost ring as well.

There are a lot of styles of peeps. There are tang mounted, and actual barrel mounted. Some mount them close to the eye, other further away which seems to help the bifocal croud some. Look at some of the sights on line and see which ones might appeal to you. Otherwise there are iron sights that you can use as well which work fine.

I'm in the same boat as you, Idaho does not allow scopes on muzzleloaders. I don't use an appeture on my guns, just unscrew it and use it as a ghost ring. Several brands and styles availible. Some may require a change of front sights, but I have no experiance with your T/C gun so who knows if you will need to change the front. The Williams WGRS has the least amount of elevation adjustments and with that sight I usually need to install shorter fronts. I also have Williams FP and Lyman 57 reciever sights on some of my guns and they both have more adjustment, the Lyman has the most. One nice feature of the Lyman is the bridge can be removed by pushing a button of the bottom mount and the bridge can be removed and replaced back to zero, handy if you also have scope bases and want to switch between peep and scope. Most of my peeps I bought on Ebay for reasonable prices.

I have used peep sites on two hunting guns. A BLR with a Williams peep and a Lyman Deerstalker with a Lyman peep. Both of mine were (and are) mounted close to my eye. I believe they are easier to use in low light conditions when mounted close. However, as CayugaD states there comes a time when you must unscrew the peep to let in more light. The trick is to not lose the peep (not easy with cold hands or gloves).

All in all a much more accurate way to shoot for most hunters as opposed to open sites. If I ML hunt in a "no scope" state my Lyman comes with me. I love that peep but the Williams also served me well on that BLR.

Check out Peep Rib muzzleloader sight it is at www.eabco.com/muzzleloader it is a peep sight attached ti a scope base made for the omega and encore rifles. You could use a scope during regular season and take it off for muzzy season. I also have two guns with the v peep the is no need for a lowere sight Call RMC and the can match a rear to your front sight cost me 15.00

You can use a V-peep, which is a bit better than a straignt peep for low light conditions.Cost is not bad either at www.rmcsports.com. Chap Gleason

The front sight gives you a protected fiberoptic sight that is BRIGHT! I actually use the williams peep in the rear and the globe front sight.

With the williams peep, you can order a "target peep" appeture direct from Williams. It was about $10 plus shipping when I got mine. It has a larger apeture that is circled by brass for good low light visibility.

I looked around on the web and it think I want one that mounts back on the gun in the 2 rear holes for the scope mount. From what I am reading if I go with the Williams WGRS stypeI might need to get a shorter front sight as well. Thompson also has one that is made for the Omega so maybe I wouldnt need to swap out the front sight.

I like the way the Williams and Thompsonsites mount to the gun. Any other places / manufacturers for a peep to lookat for a standard Omega?

My buddy just put a Williams peep on his Omega. He had a hell of a time trying to get his front sight low enough so that it would be on thetarget at 100 yd. He ended up getting a lower new front sight and even modifying that until it would shoot high enough.
