I caught a mink in a live trap with dry cat food don't know if it was dumb luck or skill.

just the fact that he is long slender and jet black.. the weasels around here are white right now. I am guessing you have a mink. Cool.. make a little coat of of his sorry hide. All you can do is look for how he is getting inside. That is where I would be putting a trap. So he has to walk on it. Good luck.

I suspect it is a mink also. They are smarter than most so will be difficult to catch. I had a dog that killed nine one winter by himself (quite a deal as mink will usually kill a dog). Dog was half pit bull and half fox terrrier (stupid dog but really tough and liked to kill things). I have some victor number 1 1/2 animal traps from my days as a kid trapping muskrats. I would de-scent one and bury it in some kitty litter hang a bunch of chicken liver and guts about a foot and a half above it and hope for the best. If you don't have a trap I will send you one. By the way if you catch the mink be careful they will take fingers off in one bite. You may run out of chickens before I could get the trap to you. With the PETA people active nowthe traps are getting hard to find.

Hey Keith - If that dog is still around can I borrow it so I can loan it to my mother-in-law?

Don't know if this will help, but here's a pic ofcouple mink that have been tanned.
In the flash they look much lighter than in natural light. About 26" nose ot tip of tail.

Just be glad it is not a fisher.. we have them and pine martins around here (although you don't see pine martins too often). If you ever run into a fisher while walking in the woods you better leave that thing alone. And if you have a dog, he better leave that thing alone. Those fishers will attack you in a heart beat. In fact I have a sign the DNR posted on a tree in my front yard, telling the trapping regulations on fisher.

The next step in the weasel line is a badger (which we also have.. if you get chased by one of them, they are determined little critters) and after that is wolverines. I do not think and hope not, that we have them in the area.

For a never fail bait on weasels and mink get a can of sardines and bait the trap tying the fish on the trigger BOTTOM Side. This way they have to pull and tug the bait to get it loose with fatal results. Spread a little of the oil around as well. Now you may also get the neighborhood cats as well. Trying to take them with a gun is pretty much a waste of time since you don't know when they will come for sure. If they see you first they are long gone.
