Default Mr. sane I did my Homework assignment

I got bored waiting for the race to start. so I went out and shot about 12 times. I took the new englander out and did another offhand sessions. I am getting the feel for this rifle. only problem. I found 4 patches and found holes in the center of the patches. they where a 50% bore butter 50% crisco, .015thinkness, 80gr pyrodex rs. what could it be doing that?

I shot the target upside down. 1-4 where prb with the patch lubed with bore butter. 1 was on a clean barrel 4 was all my doing. the 2 holes in the bottem of the box was a round ball and 214gr swc .429 homecast. all offhand at 30yrds.

Sometimes if the patches are old, and have been greased for a while they will blow out. Otherwise, start checking the bore of the rifle for ruff spots.

I am planning on getting to the range tomarrow. I try it again and keep track of the patches. but what I am getting just from the offhand sessions. the bore butter patches working well. I got some homemade patches I want to try too.

Way to go, Corey. My New Englander used to be my favorite "fun" gun for plinking and just playing around. Lately, the Zouave is trying to take its place. The NE may win though - it carries easier.

I think I am going to work up some type of hunting load for it. I have a problem getting the first shot off but once it goes, I had only one hang fire

You should not be having ignition problems with Pyrodex in a New Englander. If it's a "first shot" problem you're probably leaving a little oil or gunk around the nipple. Just for kicks, next time out, pull the nipple before your first shot and (1) make sure the base is clean and the flash hole is open, and (2)swab the channel under the nipple with a pipe cleaner. Bet it solves your problem.

My hunting load with my New Englander is 90 grains Pyrodex RS and a 385 grain Great Plains conical. DEADLY.

thanks for the idea. I swab the barrel but I did not think of the channel.

I think my hunting load is going to be some type of conical. got a lot of work to do on it.
