There was a guy that did some testing on .209 primers to see how they ranked from an explosive standpoint, using a bullet shoved against the breech plug without a load of powder. He'd drop in a primer, pull the trigger, then measure how far up the barrel the bullet went to determine how hot the different primers were. While the test isn't super scientific, it was interesting...
I can't find the darn link to that test now after much looking. Anybody?

Let me guess...
#1 cheddite
#2 federal
#3 winchester
#4 remington
#5 win 777
#6 rem kleenbore
Was I right?
I can't remember man! That's why I've been searching for the link for a couple days now. I'm interested in finding the most readily available and least hot primer of the group without resorting to the vari flame or pistol case solution.

Jimimac, If you want to do your own testing you might consider using a sub-base and any kind of a chronagraph they come out at around 1,000 fps with a standard win 209. Set up with the chronagraph only 3 to 5 feet out as the wind will seriously affect the result other wise. Lee
Question from a noob here...What is the benifit of using a faster or slower primer? I know that some are supposed to burn cleanner, but is that all it is? If it burns a little slower it will be a more complete burn or something? Just curious what the significance of the test is showing.
A hotter primer can give you a slight increase in velocity, at the cost of more fouling(usually). Winchesters seem cleaner than feds, which are hotter.
