Default Cabin and thieves

I have a small cabin in Alabama and I went up Thur's for a few days of ML hunting. You have to use an ATV or walk in to the cabin. As I came down the hill I saw 2 familiar faces coming out of the tractor shed with 4 cans of diesel fuel. After they saw me they took off leaving one of their ATV's. I went up to the top and went over to their granddads. He is another grandparent raising his kids kids. He rounded them up and they admitted they got caught. This is the second time I have caught these 2 guy's. He promised he would lay the wood to them and I said OK but the next time I will prosecute. I did file e report with the Sheriff and gave him pics off of my hidden cameras. I also had him remove the ATV. I do not understand some people today. If they needed some fuel I would have given them some. Those $79 trail cameras have sure been helpful at the cabin and the ATV/ tractor shed.
I didn't shoot any deer but saw some nice 6 pointers that will be nice in a year or two. I set the 4 on one side rule an it is difficult to abide by for sure.

You're a much more peaceful forgiving person then I am... If they had done it before they had not learned from the first time they were caught. There would have been no second chance. I would have put the law on them. Of course then you run the worry of what they will do to your place while you are not there.

It is a shame the way SOME individual's human nature has gotten so dishonest. Some people feel no remorse or guilt over stealing from someone else. In fact some of the young people get a big kick out of it. I was raised different I guess. My Dad used to tell me there was nothing worse then a thief or a liar. He once joked a murderer might only do it once because they get rid of their problem, but a thiefwill always have that in him, and a liar is someone to not trust and stay away from. While his comparisons might be untrue and a little harsh, as people can and do change.. he was trying to impart in us kids the rules of life.

I hope this is the end of your problems...

I think it is all about values and work ethic and unforunately those two things are being lost in a lot of the youth today. The worst part even speaking as a former teacher I do not know how we can reverse that if it does not start at home...

Other than that hope you had a enjoyable time in the woods... I envy you that you have a place that you can go and get away...

It's tough today to have a second place if your not there all the time it seems like some body is always messing with it. I have a place in the Berkshirs of Ma. and it has been broke into countless times the last time they piled a bunch of magizines in the living room and lit them on fire. They must have left as soon as they did it cause it went out, Thats how I found it.Door was smashed as well as all the windows. I don't keep insurance on itas it would cost a bundle case I'm not there supervising it. I also have some land in western Maine with my camper on it and every year someone helps themselves to part from it. People just ain't what they used to be.

I own some hunting land and built a cabin on it. my neighbors thought that that they could still hunt on my property because the old land owner allowed them to. I put up no trespassing signs but that didnt stop them ( you could see there tracks in the snow ) then I purchased a couple game cameras. got pictures of ther dogs running the wood, but not them. But the best thing I ever did was to make up some signs and place them around the borders of my property, stating. " Game cameras on this property NO TRESPASSING." This stopped them "Cold Turkey". Wheather you have the cameras out there or not. They sure dont like getting caught trespassing. I dont have my cameras out all the time but they dont know that.

Hunting land $$$$$$$$. Game Cameras $$$$$$$,Trespassers Thinking you might have Cameras on your property. """"" Priceless """

I think oldwun, cayugad and sabotloader's responses says it all. I'm retiring on March 1st after 38 years in law enforcement. I've seen things I wished no one would have to see, including me. But I've also seen that things appear to begetting worse, too. I was raised by grandparents in the 1950's due to necessity on my mothers part. My father left us and a single mom back then was treated like a disease. I considered my grandfather as my father and he "laid the wood" to me several times. I attribute my ethics and morals tomy mother,my grandfather,my grandmother AND several teachers / coaches along the way. Many times during my professional life, I've been accused of doing the morally and ethically right things because I was in law enforcement and that was expected of me. I simply told these accusors that it was reversed and I was in law enforcement because it was my morals and ethics thatled me down that path. I think it will still be up to today's parents and teachers to continue the fight in making the world a better place.

The Bible says "A child left to himself will grow to dishonor his mother". And "Honor thy father and thy mother, it is the first promise, so it will go well for you." Well, it went well for you, since you obeyed authority, if you dishonor your mother and father by not obeying them, they you will have problems with authority all your life from bosses at work, to civil authority, to law enforcement. Prison Fellowship, a ministry started by Chuch Colson of Watergate fame, did a little thing a while back on Mother's day they gave all inmates in prison a card and stamps and a pen to write their mother, most did and loved it. When fathers day came, they did the same thing, the men rebelled almost to a man they hated their father, and they didn't want the cards. So if you have no authority over you, you sew the seeds of your own distruction and "go your own way" and do only what is right in your own eyes. Look that up in the Bible, and you will see that is what evey evil started with. That is all I know about that (Forrest Gump, about 1995). Chap Gleason

Well said Chap.

I will also say that a Thief and a Liar are the same.

One steals material things, and the other one steals your Trust.

The cabin door does not have a lock. I figure if they want in they will get in. The grandfather is OK. I have let him hunt there for years. You work all your life and just when you think its your time something falls into your arms. God tells us to take care of each other and do what is right. I released the ATV from the Sheriff at noon today. I have gates with locks and these suckers cut thru another property and came in the back way. No old logging roads or any other trail. I found out they were trading fuel for dope. That changes the rules for me. My son said he thought we were using a lot of diesel and gas this year. The granddad called my wife and ask us to have them arrested he cannot handle them anymore so they will be picked up ASAP.
