Hello, I have a 54 cal great plains hunter rifle (1 in 32 twist). I have beenshootingREAL bullets., but now I want to try a 54 cal sabot. Problem here is that I cant find one that has the polymer tip.( I use that kind in my 50 cal knight and have great accuracy. ) so maybe if I purchase a box of 50 cal Hornady sst's and then purchase a different sabot that will work with the 54 cal lyman. Could I do that ??? If so what would I need from MMP. And I would like to use the 250 grain SST.
Thanks-a Bunch. Steve

Are the 250 grain sst bullets 45 cal ?? Thanks, Steve
The SSTs made for 50 caliber riflesare 50 caliber sabots with 45 caliber bullets. I don't have any 250 grain SSTs, but the the 300 grain ones I have mic out at .452. I would guess the 250 grain ones are .452 also.

steviebiggun,The purple sabot and the 50 Cal.300gr soft point or the Speer 300 or 325 GDHP give me excellant accuracy and are devistating on deer and boar. I use them with 140 gr RS in my System one 54 cal barrel, you can get 350gr, 400gr and 500gr. I have not use any of the heavy ones yet as I had such excellant results with the 300 gr. The 300gr soft point designed for the 50 cal Desert Eagle gives me very consistant minute of angle accuracy has a very high BC and while I have taken several deer and boar [including a big boar at a long angle] I have never recovered one as they all ways pass through leaving an exit hole about the size of a 50 cent piece.
Irregauardless of the popularity of the 50 cal I believe that using the bigger cal bullet gives more stomping power, which dont mean much with deer or boar but when it comes to bufflo moose big bear or elk I would us the 350 gr XTP or maybe even the 400gr but unless you are going to Africa the 500gr is a bit much. The 325g looks like what you want. Not a aerodynamic as the SST but certainly a thumper. Also BarnesXPB in .50 for Smith and Wesson will work in a .54 cal sabot: http://www.barnesbullets.com/products/pistol/

Johnmorris, you may have to experiment around a bit, since I already had the stuff any way I played with my 1-48 TC renagade and my purple sabots; mine likes the 300gr bullets and a 110gr load of RS, I tried the 350gr but they did not have the accuracy that the 300 did in my gun. Lee
