Default Scope questions

I am thinking of scoping one of my muzzleloaders in the next month or so. I am thinking about the Nikon Pro Staff 3X9. One thing I'm wondering about is how do you protect your scope against the powder burns you can get with the blowback. The gun I am going to scope is a Knight disc extreme. Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks,
Art

I have the same scope with the BDC on my Optima and it has worked out well. I do not get much blow back so I just make sure I clean the underneath side when cleaning. I have read where others have used tape, plastic casings etc to protect their scopes.

I don't know how much blow back you get using the discs. I know TC makes a leather deal with velcro to use around your scope. Get all the eye relief you can especially if you shoot heavy loads. I have seen 3 bad cuts at the range this year from folks using 150 gr of powder. I see no reason for much over 100 gr myself.

The amount of blow back is pretty easy to contol. First, mount the scope with Warnes QD rings. You can then take the scope off at the end of the shooting session which allows you much easier access to clean it. Also it makes cleaning the rifle a little more easy. To protect the belly of the scope, a simple piece of black electrical tape can be placed on the bottom of the scope. There should not be too much blow back out of the red primer holder Disc Extreme. I shoot a Knight Disc with the orange primer holder, and the amount of blow back is very little.

Wash the bottom of the scope with soap and water using a tooth brush and some patches. Then wipe it off with an alcohol patch and finally oil it back up at the end of the day before you replace it back to the bases. Its that easy.

Personally I shoot a Nikon Pro Staff on my White Ultra Mag. I do notuse anything to protect the belly of the scope. And if you want to see some blow back shoot the old style hammer striker rifles with a #11 cap. Then you know blow back problems. So far the Nikon Pro Staff has stood up to all the heat from the rifle's open breech. I only have shot perhaps 1000 rounds through and under the scope. The finish on the scope is "near" new in appearance. It might have dulled a little but unlike the Bushness and the Sightron that actually LOST their finish from the open breech rifles, the Nikon is standing strong.

I use Imperial sizing wax for my rifle reloading. I just put a dab of the wax on my finger and rub it on the bottom of the scope(Vaseline will also work). Everything wipes right off with a patch. you should not be getting alot of blowback, but there is always some. I would be more worried about your trigger mechanism. Tom.
