Default tried the 250gr REALs today

Finally had a chance to slip out and shoot some today. I had cast a small batch of the 250gr Lee REAL bullets when I got the new mould recently and have been looking for a chance to test them in my T/C NewEnglander.
I set a target at 50 yards, dry-patched the barrel to get any oil out and snapped a couple caps. Then I poured down 80gr of Goex fffg and seated a REAL. At 50 yards I was about 3" high and1/2" right. Loaded up another and it went through the first hole! Shot #3 about 1" right of the first two. I adjusted the rear sight down and was bullseye level but still 1" right. Adjusted 2 clicksleft and shot 1" left. Split the difference on adjustmentand went back 1 click right and was in the 1" bullseye. Next 2 shots in the bullseye, too.
I think I'm going to like the 250gr REAL!
The load easily and I sure can't complain about that accuracy with open sights!
A 4 day muzzleloading season for deer opens next Thursday and I'll have a hard time deciding which rifle to pack along now. Sure would like to see the results of putting one of those little lead bullets through a deer's shoulder.

Default RE: tried the 250gr REALs today

My New Englander is a .54 caliber and I found basically the same thing. I shoot the 300 grain REAL with 85 grains of Goex or Graf's & Sons 2f powder with some extreme accuracy. Also this would be good deer medicine in anyones book. I've used REAL conicals for many years on deer. A friend of mine refuses to hunt with anything but a 300 grain REAL in his .54 Hawkins and has yet to have a deer take a step after the shot.

It would sound like you have a great load there Wabi. Keep the reports coming. I was going to shoot today but I had company on and off, and it was drizzle and 37ºstoday. Not real nice out there, and worse if you had to drive on the roads.

Do you offhand if they make a REAL mold for .45 cal? If they do, have you heard if they shoot well too? I have cast the Lee shotgun key drive slugs in the past and they actually shoot pretty well, so it seems Lee products have some potential even though they are wallet friendly.

They do make a mold for the .45cal. I tried some in my deer creek .45 and they didnt offer good accuracy for me. Also loaded hard. One rifle differs from the other so you'll never know until you shoot them.
