Default Late gun season opened today....

.........And at 9:30 AM I decided any sane person would head for home! [&:]

Here in southern Ohio we're getting a winter mix of rain/snow/sleet and the prediction is for changing to heavy rain, then back to snow/sleet. I faithfully loaded up the muzzleloader this morning and headed out anyway. After a short drive to the place I hunt (about 3 miles from home) I headed into the woods and small fields along a small creek with light rain/sleet falling. After a short time it started coming down harder, so I set a course for the pop-up ground blind we have out. Got situated in the blind and all was well. A nice comfortable chair to set in and a roof over my head to keep the rain/sleet off. Then it changed to more of a sleet/snow mix and soon the ground was covered in white ice. By 9:30 I decided any sane deer would be comfortably bedded down in the thick cedars, and any sane hunter would be getting home before the roads became impassable - so I headed for home!!!!!!!!!
Saw one bad wreck on the drive home. Someone had flipped a truck (I think) and the local fire dept. rescue team was on the scene. Looked like an extended cab pickup with no bed attached anymore! It was on it's top off the roadway and against an old farm shed. I didn't spend time looking at it, I just got through the one open lane when directed to do soby the officers on scene.
Made it home safely - and I plan to stay right here until the storm passes!
Ony 2 days in this portion of gun season, but I already have 2 deer in the freezer, and there's still 4 days of muzzlelodaer season at the end of December, so it's not like I need to risk my health & safety just to shoot another deer.

No animal is worth risking your life or health. A wise move on your part.. Better luck another day.

Late ML season opened today in VA too, we too are calling for sleet/freezing rain. It hasn't started yet, but I assume it will soon. I called the day a bust because of it and turns out that it hasn't started yet so I could have went out. Oh well

Problem is it's only a 2 day gunseason and the same type weather is predicted for tomorrow. [:@]
Oh well, back to the crossbow on Monday if it clears up.
