RE: tc magnum musket nipples
If you're shooting loose powder, I do not see the musket nipple and top hat as an advantage over the #11 percussion cap. In fact I see them as a disadvantage. Musket caps do not fit as tight as #11 caps do in general. So you need to keep an eye on the top hat. Pinching the sides together a little helps them to stay on the nipple better. Also, consider this, a loose fit means a greater chance of water getting in there. Although I really do not see that happening if you're careful.
And with pellets, while a musket cap might be better, I am of the school.. if you want to shoot pellets then shoot a 209 primer or one of the small caliber ignition systems. Why take chances with a musket cap. The musket cap had one advantage back in the day. When soldiers were in the battle field, and were in the heat of it, they did not need to be scrambling for a small tiny #11 cap. They needed something larger, easier tohandle, that could be gripped, placed over the nipple of their rifle, and deploy a large amount of fire through often times clogged and or fowled breeches to still get ignition. The musket cap handled that job excellent.
In the modern world we are not speed loading too often, nor are we hunting with a very fowled out rifle. We normally have a pristine loaded rifle with clear bolster and the #11 will fire that just fine. Especially in the inline rifles with loose powder.
