Sighting in Question

Hey Everyone,

Need some advice. I went out today to sight in my new New England Sidekick. I was using 100gr of 777 pellet and 245gr xtp. I shot it at 25yds and 50yds. The problem that I had was that I had to move my site up to the point that it almostcomes off to get it to the center of the target. Any suggestions to get it so it does not sit so high. FYI the spot I was aim at was the size of a snuff can. Hitting about 2" high @ 50yds. Don't know if I need any further out.

Nolan- 2" high at 50 yards should put you about dead on at 100 yards. Why it required the ramp to move so far up, I do not know. Perhaps it is the kind of sight picture you are drawing. Meaning, holding level to the top or do you bury the sight to the bottom of the U or V what ever the case.

The only other thing you could do is replace the sights with something that would be more sight picture friendly. Perhaps a front sight that you could adjust to match your sight picture...

When I build a rifle I put on a tall front sight set the back at center and mid hight then move the front so that it is on "0' at 50 yds for windage the file it off untill the gun is on "0" for trajectory.
Warning:It only takes a little to move it if up take to much off you can not put it back very easy; so take a little at a time and shoot it to see where it is at, and use a group to judge not a single shot.

Got to thinking about the way I sighted in. I beleive that it was more my fault then the charge I was using. I looked at my rear sight and there is a mark on the sight and marks on the sight body. I know that if I take a put the marks all the way to the top at 25yds I am about 2" below were I am aimming. Were I have it know I would say I am 5" high from were I am aiming. My rear Sight has two green dot and the Front is red.I would place the sight right at the bottom of the center.When Iput the marks together on the high mark it is1" below wereI had my sight aimed at. Were it is now I am 2" high of the center and about 5" high of were I am aiming. For some reason my brain told me that if I aimed there I should be hitting center of the bulleye.However my bullseye is 3" across and my shell aint that big.So in realite I am about 5" high at 50yds. Just thought I better share my brain fart.

I believe there are two possible solutions to this shooting too low:

1. Reduce the height of the front sight;

2. Use a heavier bullet. As a rule, a heavier bullet will have a longer barrel time, allowing the gun muzzleto risein recoil more before the bullet exits, thus landing higher on the target. You'd compensate for this by lowering the rear sight to drop the point of impact on the target.

BUT, since it seems you are now actually shooting too high, then all you have to do is lower that rear sight slide until you have your bullet striking +2" to +3" at 50 yards, and do any further adjusting from there.

The way I zero my muzzleloaders is for the bullet to strike dead center at 100 yards. Then I shoot at 50 and 75 yards to see how much higher the bullet strikes at those distances, so I am not going to have s midrange miss by shooting OVER the game animal. Next, I shootat 125 yards to see how much the bullet drops between 100 and 125 yards, to see if any holdover is going to be needed for targests beyond 100 yards. I don't try ML shots beyond 125 yards. This is my self-imposed range limit these days due to vision problems.
