Default Hornady 300gr SST Sabots

Okay,

So I am trying to put aside the Powerbelts that I've used with success and go with a different sabot this year. I am going to try these Hornady's and see what happens.

I know this is objective, but should I start with 2-50 grain pyrodex pellets are go straight to the magnum charge of 150 grains? If you shoot them...what do you use? Are these easy to load?

How easy they are to load depends on the exact diameter of your barrel and what sabot you try to shoot them with, they will normally shot best with 90 to 120 gr what ever your particular gun finds its harmonics at, they will quite often shoot well with the load you are suggesting if you have matched up the right sabot with them.
The sabot they come with is most likely to match up with White or Knight barrels if you have a TC the Shock Wave is the same bullet with a MMP-HPH 24 sabot which will quite often match up with a TC. The tolorance on some of the other brands is to wide to predict what will fit them thats why they are cheaper. Lee

Your gun will tell you whether to use one load or the other. For me, I found they shot well over 130gr of Pyro pellets. That load in a 26" barrel averages about 1935fps and is more than enough to put down an elk at 200+ yards energy wise. I get around 1.5" groups at 100 yards and under 4" at 200 yards with that load. This year I am using 110gr of 777 2F under them for cow elk. The velocity is around 1870fps and 1" accuracy at 100 yards. The difference in trajectory at 200 yards is not worth worrying about, maybe an inch or so. So far I like the 300's.

Thanks for the replies.

If it will kill a cow elk...it should do fine with a lil whitetail.

I doubt I will take a 200 yards shot....150 would be pushing the limits for me. We'll see how they group and go from there.

Do you have to swob between every shot with these? I didn't with Powerbelts......

Yea...Shoot them with 150 grains...Take a video, I need a good laugh...

How easy they are to load depends upon which ML you have, there are no industry standards on the bore diameter of ML...

I shoot 250s and that's all you need for whitetails...90gr FFF Goex, sight in 2 1/2 inches high at 100 yards and I'm 2 1/2 low at 150...

I always clean between shots and use loose powder, remember you are handloading...Work with 80-120 grains of powder and see what your gun likes the best...There is no need to use 150 grains of powder....

In general 150g is a waste of powder, 100 is plenty, save your shoulder and you wll be fine to 150 yards with the SW. I agree with NC Hawkeye, 2.5" high at 100 and you are gold to 150. Chap Gleason

Nchawkeye,

I am not sure if you are busting me or making fun of me....I should have clarified that I use Pellets, not loose powder. The video might still be funny. Obviously you tried them with the 150 grains...

I will use 2-50 grainpellets and swob between shots and see what happens. I can always revert back to the Powerbelts.
