Default Anyone use American Pioneer powder?

Does anyone use American Pioneer powder in their muzzleloaders? How does it work for you? Right now i am using 90gr. of Pyrodex Select powder and have good results out of my CVA Optima. Im just one of those guys that wants to try somethin new just to see how it performs. Thanks for any info.

APP works good for some and terrible for others. I just bought another pound of it to play with myself. APP is a very clean burning powder, so swabbing will not be necessary. Some people do claim it is moisture friendly since it is a sugar based powder. So watch it close on humid days.

I switched acouple weeks ago to APP. My rifle seems to like it just a bit better than RS. The guy at the store told me that it is made at the same factory as the Shockey powder. Shoots pretty good and easy to clean

i use the premium version of APP, Jim Shockey's Gold. It has worked well for me. Formerly i used 90 grains of JSG with very good effect on deer and hogs. Recently i have boosted the charge to 120 grains of JSG. Itis very accurate in my Encore. JSG is much cleaner burning than Pyrodexor 777.Keep a couple of small dessicant paks in the can after you open it andkeep the lid on tight.

I would not use anything else... I've read alot of silly claims about the powder but it has always shot great for me. I shoot three of the JSG compressed 50 grain Sticks and a Nosler bullet out of my Pro-Hunter. This load was in my gun just over a month in the S.C. humidity and opening day of the N.C. season I shot a doe at 95 yards and hit her perfectly... but give it a try and see what you think,,, you always want to shoot a powder/bullet combo that shoots well in your gun...

Previous issue of American Rifleman had MV of various BP and Subs, APP was most variable. See thiis. It is a VERY clean burning powder. I does NOT have the power of 777. It absorbs water somewhat and clumps up even in a sealed container, but still shoots OK. I have shot a pound of it, but not for hunting. There is NO crud ring like 777. I think out west in dry conditions, it would be a great powder, back east here, too humid and too much rain to use, but that is just me.

i have never had a clumping problem with APP or JSG. It does attract moisture, but that is taken care of with a couple of dessicant paks.

That is an interesting chart... I had never seen that before. As for the clumping, I have had it clump. I then shook it and broke the clumps up. Another complaint is the FFg is so course, it is hard to even pour through the powder measure. But it does work well with a lot of rifles and combinations.

I have chronographed JSG. Using 300 grain Gold Dots and Harvester regular short sabots, with100 grains JSG FFG I got 1264 fps average for a 5-shot string, with 120 grains - 1381 fps, with140 grains -1388 fps.Pretty low. But it is clean burning and gives me pretty good groups.

With the same bullet/sabot combination and 100 grains of powder, I can over 1700 fps with T-7 FFG and over 1500 fps with Pyrodex RS.

Yes, that is what I did also, put a pill moisture absorber in the BP can.
