RE: surface rust
A light surface rust is not a big deal. A good quality solvent on a patch will "normally" take it right back off. If not a stronger metal cleaner like Brasso might be in order. Once you get the rust off, wipe real hard on that area with a oiled patch. You want to work oil back into that area as solid as you can.
Next time you come in, take apatch or in my case, acotton glove and I spray that cotton glove with gun oil. Then I put them on and wipe all the metal parts free of any finger prints, condensation, etc. Then set the rifle up somewhere. After you take the gloves off, put them in a zip lock baggie for the next time. Also you are postive that the rifle is wiped down, and no finger prints are on it, so it should be safe from surface rust. Cotton gloves are cheap. If they get too stinky throw them away and get another pair.
