Default 1 in 32" Twist - Is It Really Suitable For Both Conicals and Sabots?

Lyman advertises its Great Plains Hunter barrel (1 in 32 twist) as suitable for "todays modern conical and sabot bullets". But most manufacturesseem to use a 1 in 28" twist for sabot shooting guns. There's got to be a reason, right"

Anyone out there with a1 in 32" twist gun? What do you shoot out of it?

my cva staghorn does excellent with a 300 grain xtp in a knight high pressure sabot and 110 grains pyrodex p. It has a 24" barrel with 1:32 twist.

They dont make the 1-38 twist anymore either but it shoots real bullets and maxihunters and 230and 250 XTP in sabots real good[50 cal]and in 54cal mine shoots widner 300gr soft points into a ragged hole @ 100 with 140 gr RS, the old System One uses musket caps and dont get crudring or even very dirty cleanest shooting inline I have ever had. Lymans one of the best low priced ones, the Omega Z5 is the only one that can be found in that price range sometimes thats better. Lee

That's good to hear guys. Trying to decide whether to get a 1 in 60 or a 1 in 32on my Christmas .54 Great Plains flinter.

Now, what about patched round balls. Would you call a1 in 32" twist "good","just OK", or "not so good"?

Ok with lower charges.

Hope you are going the .54 way! Flintlock or percussion?

1-32 will shoot conical best, and sabots. You need both of them. The 1-60 is a good roundball barrel. I intend on getting the same rifle and then getting a second barrel.

I guess I ought to go with the round ball barrel. With iron sights, I can't shoot worth a durn much past 75 yards anyway and a .54 RB ought to be good out to 100.

1 in 60" is strictly a round ball barrel. The 1 in 48" will shoot both conical and round ball well. I use the 250 gr REAL in my rifle as well as patched RB. Got the racks to prove it. The length of the barrel determines the spin. 1 turn in 60" is only a half turn or so in a 30" barrel so a 1 in 28" will put a full spin on a conical or sabot which they need to stablize.
