Default Staghorn ?

I see a couple guys here are shooting staghorns so maybe ya can answer my ?. A friend brought over a staghorn for me to look at but it didnt have a breech plug. By the looks of the bolt it was shooting #11 caps but he wants it conv. to 209s. I looked on different places and found some conversions but for pre 2000 staghorns. What is the difference and how can I tell if this is a pre 2000. Thanks Kerry

Look at the serial number on the rifle. The last two numbers of the serial number is the year it was made. For instance the last two numbers on mine is 03 so it was made in 2003.

As for converting it, do not be in all that big a hurry. With loose powder that rifle should shoot fine with a #11 cap. There are new breech plugs you can buy that come set up for a 209 primer. I have that on my rifle, but I also have the musket and #11 breech plug and ignitions.

cayugad, if it was me I would find a #11 breech plug for it but he wants to shoot pellets and 209s. He doesnt shoot much only hunts and His uncle gave him the gun without the plug so he doesnt know anything about it either. I'll check the # then go from there. Thanks guys

http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=989900&t=11082005 that is what my breech plug looks like. And it works great.

http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=895782 he will need a capper/decapper as well. Sometimes the primers are hard to get out of the mouth of the breech plug.

Then I carry a dog bone capper which holds ten primers, when I hunt and that is the easy way to put a new primer into the breech plug.

the capper isnt even needed when you use the winchester triple 7 209's. Thats what i love about them lol. But it is a good idea to buy the tool anyways.

checked the #s and looks like a 97, so now I have to find a pre2000 209 conversion kit. Anyone know where? Thanks Kerry

That link I put up is for a Staghorn breech plug. They are a single unit with the primer going into the breech plug. Whether you would need a different hammer I could not say. I would suggest giving CVA/BPI a phone call. They would be able to help you out. Since the Staghorn is no longer produced, they might be your only source for parts. The Buckhorn Magnum took the place of the Staghorn as I understand it.
