Default Knight Disc

Picked up a newKnight Disc rifle in a trade. I stuck a Leupold 4x scope on it and took it out to try it out yesterday evening. I didn't have much in the way of sabot/bullet combinations on hand. I first checked it @ 25 yards to get it on paper.
I had an 80 grain measure, so I tried it with 80 grains ffg T-7.
I then moved to 50 yards and tried some Knight 260 grain lead bullets with sobots. (shots 1,2, &3) Not too good!
I then tried some T/C 250 grain shockwaves I had. (shots 4, 5, &6) Better, but still not what I'm thinking this rifle is capable of!
Any suggestions? Perhaps more powder?........

(How's that for being cheap when it comes to targets? )

I have a Knight Disc and it is a powder hog. Don't spare the horn to it, if your rifle is anything like mine. I shoot 100-110 grains of Triple Se7en 2f and a 250 grain Shockwave with very good results.

Another thing this rifle shoots well for some reason are 300 grain Saber Tooth conicals.

While they hit a little lower then the Shockwaves, they are bigger and do not have as high a BC. Over all the Disc is a good shooter, but then some days for some reason, I take that rifle out and it would not hit the side of a barn. Next day out, you could drill the bolts out of the hinges on the door....

Is your Disc bedded? What I mean is, does the barrel fit really tight in the stock of the rifle?

One thing I forgot to check before I went to the range []
When I got home and took it apart for cleaning I found the screw that holds it in the synthetic stock was very loose. I cranked it down tight when I re-assembled the rifle, and I could feel the fore-end move as it tightened down. Not sure if this is good or bad? Should it fit tightly?

I have a Knight Disc, I used the Knight 260 lead bullets the first couple of years I ML hunted. Got several deer with it and these 260 bullets, all one shot kills, then my brother taked me into 295g PB--big mistake. I was using 2 Pyrodex pellets. I have since switched to loose 100g of 777, it also shoot well in the Disc. I like the Disc for accuracy, I dislike taking the bolt apart and cleaning it. Very difficult to get the bolt really clean. I now have taken the scope of it, and it is now my 0-70 yard open sight rifle when I am in heavy cover. I have only shot Knight, PB and Nosler Partitions in the Knight, the best for penetration and accuracy is the Nosler, please see this:

http://www.the-gleasons.com/noslerpartition300g.htm

This was shot at 100 yards with American Pioneer, but I get about the same groups with 777. I would say this is about 1.5" group, which is great for hunting, since bullet placement is #1, then penetration, then expansion in my mind. Best Wishes. Chap Gleason

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I'll raise the powder charge and see what happens. First I'll have to get an assortment of bullets to try. Probably get some 250s and 300s in the same brandto see which weight it prefers, then try a few different brands.
BTW - I didn't mention it, but I did try afew Lee 360gr improved minis. It didn't care for them at all! Before we left I loaded a round ball for my 7 year old with 25 gr ffg T-7. He put it right in the bullseye at 25 yards! Never let an inexperienced kid shoot your rifle - he'll outshoot you every time.

Greeting Okie48,

Yes the PB made by CVA. Yes they shot good out of my Knight regular Disc. I am one of the people that say the PB bullet fragment on bone hits, since I have experienced hitting a big buck in the shoulder with a PB a few years ago (at the time I did NOT know what I know now about PB, bullet expansion, penetration, fragmentation, etc), here is the genesis of my questions on this:

http://www.the-gleasons.com/Bullet%20penetration.doc

As for doI think they are a good hunting bullet, in my opinion they are good for "broadside shots, archery shots at slow ML speeds". We have debated PB on this ML forum and I would prefer not to debate it again, it always leads to heated debate between the PB lovers and the PB haters, and frequently there are misunderstandingand hurt feelings. If you want my view on PB and a taste of the debate, it is here:

http://www.the-gleasons.com/powerbelt_page.htm

I would say I am in the PBdisliker camp, not the hater camp. I prefer a strong bullet that holds together, penetrates well, expands to 2x it diameter and kills quickly, leaving an excellent blood trail. The Nosler Partition does that for me. However that said, I plan on using either a Parker Ballistic Extreme or a TC Shockwave for hunting with new Savage 10ML this fall, primarily because the Nosler doesn't have a 200 yard bullet. In my smokepole inlines I will shoot the Nosler. Each gun is different and you must choose the bullet, powder, sabot and primer that makes your gun accurate and deadly. I use to be in the camp of "any bullet", any powder, any primer and any sabot will do" and basically chose the cheapest of each component. I now know better, I didn't before, I am sorry to say.

I see your a racked buck, so I am sure you know most or all of these things, so if I am preaching to the chior, please forgive me. Best wishes. Chap Gleason
