Big whoops but a darn good start!

I picked up those 410 grain great plains bullets today and what i thought was ffg triple 7 that turned out to be fffg triple 7 when i got home. I set a target up @ 20 yards and took a shot and was happy as heck to see that the bullet hit exactly where i was aiming. I only had enough light for one shot before it was to dark, but so far i think this new bullet will be a winner. All i will probably have to do is adjust my powder charge up once i start working in the 50-75 yard range.
70 grains FFFg triple 7
410 grain hornady great plains
Winchester Triple 7 209 Primer " $8.69 a box [&:]"
Recoil was.... well, there was none! I really love that limbsaver recoil pad i had put on the rifle some months back

I think i will max my load out at 80 grains of triple 7, thats what the rifle loved with the 385's i used to shoot. Going to do a few more shots tomorrow evening and tune it in for 50 yards.

That sounds like it will be a good hard hitting load for you.. keep us posted on your test results.

3 shots today. 1st shot was right where it should be, but a couple inches to the right " i moved a wee bit" #2 and #3 were dead center but 4" low. #2-3 shots measured 3/8" center/center. I used 80 grains fffg triple 7, May bring it back down to 70 and see how that does.

This is the only thing i hate about triple 7 is that your first shot will be there and then the next 2 will drop a few inches lower. I dont get that with pyrodex rs.
Going to use cci primers the next go around once i swab the barrel.

I had great luck with those 410 gr. GP conicals out of my CVA last season. With 90 gr. of FF triple seven, they'd group in to 1.5-1.75" pretty consistantly at 100 yards. I haven't had a chance to shoot them out of my KRBas of yet. That'll bedone on the next range visit, when it cools off a bit more.

In 4years of shooting 777,I never experienced that. It's always been a very consistant powder in the rifles I've shot it in.

r1= round one clean barrel
r2= round two, clean barrel
r3= round three, clean barrel

All the shots at the bottom of the target is from R1 and R2 but with a dirty bore. A good 4" drop when i dont swab.

R2 By the bulls eye was my fault for aiming wrong or else i would have had a perfect clover leaf.
I'll adjust my sight until i get it where my 20 yard shot was. Looking good so far, i'll just have to take a mental note to how low #2-3 shots are once i work out to 100 yards. As long as my first shot goes where i want it and i know where #2 shot will drop, i'll take it.
Sorry about the low shots, the bullet went through the 2x4 frame on my target holder and thats why the shots are so exploded.

Gander - interesting. I find my clean barrel shots are high with Pyrodex.I now foul the barrel with 60 grains of powder and a sabot then load the first round without swabbing. For reasons I can not explain, swabbing between each round thereafter keeps my "groups" nearest that first shot.

I still believe there should be a product with which we could "foul" a bore via a ramrod without subjecting the barrel to rust. Oatmeal anyone?

One of my friends has used teflon tape on the first bullet and claims that it shoots the same POI as the following shots from the fouled barrel. He did that with a White Whitetail so I am not sure it would work with other barrels or maybe it was just a quirk. Might be something to try???? I think he was shooting Pyrodex when he did that.

Figured it out. I took a shot again and it was dead in the bulls eye after i adjusted the sights, Swabbed and shot again, 4" low! Went inside to get a drink and cool down and load up another speed loader, this time with a powerbelt, went and loaded it up on a dirty bore, Hit dead on where i was aiming and dead center. It appears its just the heat thats throwing off the bullets. Im done at 50 and later this evening i will pull back to 75 yards and take a couple shots there and hopefully get it out to 100 yards today. The 348 gn powerbelts seem to be another good choice for me to try out some time.
I found a 410 gn great plains around my backstop and i got the load just right. Its a perfect mushroom without any holes. I think 90 grns would drive them to fash and expolode them.

Could it also be the "dirty bore" as the low one followed swabbing, the "dead on" did not?

all a side, those are nice groups. Whether the bore was dirty or not. I think those Great Plains Conicals would really do a number on anything you want to hunt...
