Took the Lyman Mustang to the range this evening to try the Knight .50 cal 260 gr lead bullets I bought to try for a cheap alternative for target shooting.
I cut the load back to 70 gr ffg T-7 and put a target out at 50 yards.
First shot 3" high.
Second & third touching each other and dead-on in elevation, but 1" left.
Fourth shot 2" right.
Fifth shot 3" high.
Not a pretty group!
Had a few Barnes 250 grain Expanders in the pouch so I loaded one up. 11 o'clock in the 2" bullseye. Loaded another - 8 o'clock in the bullseye.
Didn't want to shoot my last one, but it looks like the Mustang likes only expensive bullets. [:@]
I've tried 100 grains of Pyrodex, 100 grains of T-7, and now 70 grains of T-7 behind the Barnes 250s, and all groups have beenclose to2" @ 50 yards. All other bullets so far are 3 - 4" groups. If I keep the Mustang it looks like it will need a diet of the Barnes Expanders. That's my #1 choice for hunting, anyway, but it will cut down on the plinking.
It will be interesting to see what this rifle will finally like.. You have been very good about trying lots of projectiles.
