o.k. people , i'm new here so hello to everyone . i've been reading some threads and i would like to know what is your favorite bullet for deer and hogs . i have had some success with cva 295 powerbelts , and the cva 300gr big game bullet , but the penatration/ blood trails ,are not great .i shoot a cva hunterbolt magnum , i usually use 2- 50 gr pyrodex pellets , but i also have 3 lbs of pyrodex rs that i got from walmart last year for 3bucks a pound . any advise will be useful. of the 5 deer and 3 hogs i've shot in the past 4 years , only one complete pass thru .though i recovered all deer and two hogs , it wasnt easy .all shots were at less than 125 yds , 40 being the shortest .I use a scope ,

Welcome to the forum. It is good to have you here.
If penetration and blood trails is what you want, then you are looking for a bullet that will pass through every time (or close to it). Some of the better bullets for penetration are Barnes Expanders, Shockwaves (which come in two hardness levels), and some of the conicals out there. Some other great bullets are Nosler, Speer, and Remington.
Barnes are great bullets but expensive. There are like throwing a dollar bill down range every time you squeeze off a shot. Not to bad when hunting, but on a target range can get a little expensive. I shot off fifteen of them the other day testing a Knight.
Shockwaves are a moderate to expensive bullet depending on how you look at it. They do have excellent penetration. In fact some say too much as they do not expand. Others say they expand just fine. On deer and hogs I think you would need only the normal shockwave.
Speer makes a Gold Dot that people seem to like a lot. They come in all weights so I am sure you could find one that shoots well out of your rifle.
Nosler is like Barnes, great bullets but expensive IMO.
Conicals are often times over looked but do provide excellent penetration, expansion, and knock down. Maxiball, Great Plains Conicals, No Excuses Conicals are just some of them out there. Whether your rifle will like conicals is again, who knows until you try.
The last I mention is a Remington. I shoot a 405 grain Remington Flat Point .457 diameter out of my Staghorn Magnum with 90 grains of Pyrodex RS powder with excellent results. This big flat bullet seems to be a good hard hitting projectile. It seems to expand well, but so far nothing in four legs has let me test the penetration ability of it. The bullet is made to be shot out of a 45/70 government rifle. Which again, are not fast shooters, but hard hitters. You might want to look into them as well.
I am sure there are other people with better choices for bullets to try. That no pass through is a pain when the critter runs off and does not leave a good blood trail. Then it is the job of the tracker to make you look good. Again, welcome to the forum. Good to have you here.
